Her recording success continued across the 70s, with 1972's Young, Gifted and Black and 1976's Sparkle both achieving Gold stats.

The famously strong-willed Franklin had been unwilling to yield to the ideas Columbia had for her image and marketability, so after years of lackluster efforts she moved on to Atlantic Records. She also turned heads at the Grammys that year with an operatic performance: filling in for the ailing Luciano Pavoratti, she sang the Puccini aria "Nessun dorma". She died yesterday at her home in Detroit.
