Trump says Russian Federation isn't targeting U.S.; Sanders says comment was misinterpreted

Senate Democrats said they want the American interpreter at the Helsinki meeting to testify to Congress on what was said during the private Trump-Putin session. He cited USA sanctions on Russia and the expulsion of alleged Russian spies from the US, telling reporters that Putin "understands it, and he's not happy about it".

US President Donald Trump (L) and Russia's President Vladimir Putin arrive to attend a joint press conference after a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, on July 16, 2018. Rather, she contended, the president said "no" to reporters' desire to ask questions.

The Hermitage Capital CEO Bill Browder said he hasn't heard from anyone in the Trump administration and called the idea of handing over senior USA officials to the Russians "just beyond belief".

Late last week at a Washington, D.C., think tank, Coats was even more blunt than he was in his statement Monday, according to CNBC. Mr. Trump has contradicted Coats recently, telling "CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor that he doesn't know if he necessarily agrees with Coats' warning about the "critical" threat of potentially devastating cyberattacks targeting USA systems. "The system is blinking" and that "today, the digital infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack".

Trump, facing uproar over his failure to confront Putin over Russia's 2016 US election meddling, adopted his usual defiant posture two days after their Helsinki summit and called his critics deranged.

"The president is going to meet with his team and we'll let you know when we have an announcement on that", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told a news briefing.

Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett, reporting from the White House, said Trump "was sticking to the script" in his comments on Tuesday - a rare occurrence.

On Tuesday, however, Trump backtracked and claimed that he had misspoken - that he had, in fact, meant to say that he did believe that Russian Federation had interfered in the election.

USA intelligence officials have said Russian election interference efforts are continuing and now target the upcoming congressional elections in November.

Trump took widespread bipartisan heat for his comments Monday suggesting he believed Putin's denials of election meddling - and cast doubt on the United States intelligence community's unanimous conclusion that the Russians interfered to help Trump and hurt Hillary Clinton.

Taking to Twitter today, President Trump defended anew his much-criticized performance at the Helsinki summit, promising "big results" from better relations with Russian Federation and hitting back at 'haters'. "There are lots of people out there".

"So certainly as the leader of a country you would have to hold him responsible, yes". Sanders repeated that Trump was not answering the question posed in the Cabinet meeting earlier, and said Vega didn't understand his response because she asked a follow-up question.

That did not explain why Mr Trump, who had tweeted a half a dozen times and sat for two television interviews since the Putin news conference, waited so long to correct his remarks.

Sanders called the legislation a "hypothetical" and declined to say whether the president would back it.

Asked why Americans should defend North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Montenegro from attack, Trump said, "I've asked the same question. And I think that you can take the fact that the president has credibility because he saw he had misspoken and he wanted to clarify that yesterday, which he did".

"And he shouldn't be happy about it because there's never been a president as tough on Russian Federation as I have been".
