Trans Woman Says CVS Pharmacist Refused To Fill Her HRT Prescription

CVS said Friday it fired a pharmacist accused of refusing to fill a hormone prescription for a transgender customer at a Phoenix-area store.

"I left my doctor's office elated", she wrote.

A transgender woman has spoken out after being denied access to her prescribed hormones by a pharmacist in Arizona. She had been excited to finally start her first round of hormone therapy and was 'finally going to start seeing my body reflect my gender identity and the woman I've always known myself to be'.

Hilde Hall wrote a blog post on Thursday for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) describing how a CVS pharmacist in Fountain Hills, Ariz., refused to fill her prescription for hormone therapy in April.

But when she gave her prescription to the pharmacist, he denied her the medication without giving a reason, she wrote.

Hall wrote that the pharmacist repeatedly and loudly asked her why she needed the prescriptions, which almost brought her to tears.

"Embarrassed and distressed, I almost started crying in the middle of the store". But added: "I don't want to think about what might happen if this pharmacist mistreats a transgender person who does not have a good social support system".

She said she "froze" and tried to hold back her tears.

Arizona is one of six states that shield health professionals who refuse to serve customers or patients on religious or moral grounds, according to the National Women's Law Center.

In Hall's case, she said she complained to CVS, and never got an apology. "His actions did not reflect the company's values or commitment to "inclusion, nondiscrimination and the delivery of outstanding patient care", CVS said in its statement".

"We also apologize for not appropriately following up on Ms. Hall's original complaint to CVS, which was due to an unintentional oversight, " the company said.

The pharmacist refused to fill one of the subscriptions, Hall wrote.

According to CVS, The pharmacist has since been fired.

"CVS Health extends its honest apologies to Ms. Hall for her experience at our pharmacy in Fountain Hills, Arizona last spring".

Hall said she felt devastated by the rejection. She was eventually able to get her prescription filled at a local Walgreen's.

The transgender woman filed a complaint with CVS, which she said went ignored.

Hall said the pharmacist wouldn't return the prescription note.

Hall's incident comes as the Trump Administration is moving to roll back protections for transgender people in healthcare.

Companies often have individual policies to ensure customers are still served respectfully and efficiently. "If CVS does not take steps, like written policies and employee training, to protect its transgender customers from discrimination, we may explore litigation".

Walgreens pharmacists are allowed under a company policy to walk away from filling a prescription if they have a moral objection, the company said in a June statement.
