Setting out vision for future ties, Britain's May presses Brexit plans

Trump on Tuesday also said Britain's former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, who resigned on Monday over May's softer line on Brexit, was "very supportive" and "a friend".

The PM insisted that the deal she agreed with her Cabinet at Chequers last week "delivers on the vote that people gave on Brexit" in the 2016 referendum.

He said: "My constituency is a very big Leave constituency, I've had a very small number of emails making a comment about this deal".

His role as Brexit Secretary was crucial to ensuring Britain leaves the European Union next year with what Mrs May described as the "best possible deal".

Another - which has cross-party support - would enshrine in law that there would never be a border down the Irish sea.

It remains to be seen how markets will react to the paper, but many pound investors are optimistic that the publication could strengthen Sterling by providing some clarity on the Brexit process. "The trouble is that I have practised the words over the weekend and find they stick in the throat", he wrote to May.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaks to assembled guests, as she hosts a reception to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS, at 10 Downing Street, in central London on July 4, 2018. Does she rely on Labour votes to achieve Brexit or does she change her mind and go back to Lancaster House? He has nearly consistently looked to undermine her in the Brexit talks, earlier this year submitting his own "blueprint" for how the withdrawal should be carried out.

Brussels has warned that Theresa May's Brexit proposals must be workable in order to avoid a no deal scenario as the Government reveals details of its controversial European Union withdrawal plans. We have to deliver Brexit or we will be punished at the polls at the next general election.

He added that he supported the resignations of Mr Davis and Mr Johnson, and said the Tories were telling businesses that "the rules that have burdened you for year are not going to go anywhere".

And it confirms the Prime Minister's plan to have Britain follow European Union rules on goods without any say on how they are drafted.

Whilst the threshold for a leadership challenge is close, with the lobby's best journalists claiming that 40 letters have already been sent, the practicalities are not in favour of a vote before the end of the year.

But leading Eurosceptic Bernard Jenkin played down the prospects of more walkouts from the administration.

"For the record. ERG is not expecting any further resignations, nor were we expecting any in the first place", said Mr Jenkin.

May has briefed leaders including EU President Donald Tusk and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her plan and reported a positive response, although they are awaiting the detail. Less unclear is the complete nightmare that the Brexit process has become, not just for May's government but for the United Kingdom overall.

The prime minister is also likely to face some opposition in Brussels, where officials have repeatedly warned Britain to lower its expectations about how close ties can be.
