Serena Williams wins at Wimbledon, headed to finals

That mentality shifted slightly when Williams dropped her first set of the championships in the quarter-finals against Camila Giorgi and following the stunning exit of overwhelming men's favourite Roger Federer yesterday, which proved the unthinkable can happen.

This semi-final was billed as attack versus defence and it was the solid, reliable manner of Kerber that prevailed as she let an erratic Ostapenko, who was going for winners on nearly every shot, hand her a swathe of free points.

But the seven-time Wimbledon is not merely planning on matching the Aussie's 24-Slam haul and insists she won't "limit" herself by setting a finite target. Williams has won all four of their encounters.

The German attacked the biggest chink in Ostapenko's armour - her second serve, which is weak and ineffectual.

For Meghan, her attendance comes days after her whistle stop trip to Dublin, which saw the 36-year-old mark her first tour outside the United Kingdom with new husband Prince Harry.

The other semifinal sees two-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber take on 2017 French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko.

Avenatti took to Twitter to respond to his client's arrest and said the incident was "a setup and politically motivated". Reached by The Washington Post early Thursday, a representative for Sirens strip club refused to comment.

In the second set, the left-handed Kerber quickly went into the lead with Ostapenko choosing to live as dangerously as before.

After giving birth to daughter Olympia last September, Williams dealt with issues including blood clots, and she's been wearing compression leggings this fortnight as a precaution.

"These are the matches I was working for as a young kid", Kerber said, "and to stand here again in the final at Wimbledon is great". She had 14 winners and 10 unforced errors, while Kerber had three winners and - this was key - zero unforced errors.

In the driving seat, Williams began hitting the ball cleanly and with her customary mesomorphic beauty, holding her serve and then breaking Goerges, this time to love.

Eventually, Kerber's style ruled the day.

The final tally told the story: Ostapenko had far more winners, 30-10, but also far more unforced errors, 36-7. Ostapenko's strokes were missing and she grew increasingly frustrated, slapping a thigh after a miss or leaning forward and putting her hands on her knees after others. But unlike in the quarterfinals, when she needed seven match points to win, this time it required only two, with the match ending - fittingly enough - on a forehand by Ostapenko that sailed wide. There was one brief blip to come: Williams got broken for the only time while serving for the match at 5-3.
