Russian Agents Used Illinois Computer To Hack Dems In 2016, Indictment Alleges

Nielsen made the remarks Saturday while addressing a convention in Philadelphia for states' secretaries of state.

The Kremlin, meanwhile, denied anew that it tried to sway the election.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced 12 new indictments this afternoon, in connection with Russia's attempts to hack into the DNC and help Donald Trump get elected.

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein called for a unified approach to countering foreign meddling.

Despite calls by top Democrats in Congress for Trump to cancel the meeting, Pompeo told reporters on his flight back from Mexico Friday night, "I think it's very important that they meet". They released the indictment two days before Mr. Trump is to meet with Mr. Putin, raising the stakes for the meeting and implicitly pressuring Trump to speak directly to his Russian counterpart about the situation.

Trump told reporters in London Friday that he will "absolutely firmly" ask Putin about the finding by US intelligence agencies that he authorized the campaign of interference. They're now working to build support among other House Republicans.

Some of his peers declined to go that far. The eight senators requested that the president not "wing it on your own" and that experts of the State Department, Defense Department and the Central Intelligence Agency be included in the meeting.

Trump portrays the investigation as a partisan attack, but not all Republicans see it that way.

Trump has repeatedly said the investigation into suspected Russian interference in the 2016 USA election - which he casts as a "rigged witch hunt" - makes it hard for him to do substantive deals with Moscow.

What new Mueller indictments say about his direction
The indictment says the agents transferred stolen Democratic Party documents to the GRU-leased IL computer in April, 2016 . His team is investigating efforts by Russian Federation to influence the 2016 US presidential election.

Russian Federation has denied that its government played any role in the hacking.

According to the indictment, Russian agents Aleksandra Yuryevna Krylova and Anna Vladislavovna Bogacheva used fake names to travel in and around the United States in June 2014 to gather intelligence for their interference operations.

Trump's secretary of state, former CIA Director Mike Pompeo, said he was confident the meeting "will put America in a better place".

The election officials talked about technical details of blocking an incursion.

Some state officials also said Homeland Security is becoming more helpful in sharing information.

The Russians are accused of hacking into the computer networks of the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton, and then releasing stolen emails on the internet in the months before the election.

They corresponded with Americans but there's no information the Americans knew who they were talking to, said Rosenstein.

Reps. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) are renewing their effort to oust Rosenstein, according to Politico, and spent Thursday bashing Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok in an acrimonious hearing that quickly descended into a partisan proxy battle over the Mueller probe's legitimacy.

On that scale, these indictments include no additional Americans, and Rosenstein was careful to say that it was the DOJ's position that any American who communicated with these indicted Russians did so unwittingly.
