Pelosi says Putin should not address Congress

Russian President Vladimir Putin says his first summit with U.S. President Donald Trump was "successful" and is accusing Trump's opponents in the U.S. of hampering any progress on the issues they discussed.

President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin speak at a summit on July 16, 2018 in Helsinki, Finland.

This time they came from the White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders who claimed that when the President said "no" he was declining to take further questions, not disagreeing with his own intelligence chiefs.

The announcement came as the White House sought to clean up days of confounding post-summit Trump statements on Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Analysts pointed out that there are many options between embracing Putin and going to war, and that Trump has provided conflicting signals about whether he believes the USA intelligence on Russian efforts to undermine the 2016 US election.

The White House retreated from what Trump had called Putin's "incredible offer" during the Helsinki summit, revising its position just before the Senate voted overwhelmingly against the plan. "But if they don't, then it shows that POTUS either didn't give Bolton much of a readout, or he and Bolton don't trust their two most senior national security cabinet officers". "It wasn't always conciliatory in that meeting", he said, without elaborating.

Mr. Trump tweeted that the two men discussed Ukraine, but has not mentioned a referendum or revealed specifics. The White House did ultimately object to one proposal from Putin to hand over two Americans, including former U.S. Ambassador to Moscow Mike McFaul, for questioning.

As Americans groped for information about the meeting, Moscow offered snippets of its version on Friday.

He called the news media the "real enemy of the people" again in a tweet , a message that resonates with his political supporters. Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during a conference of Russian ambassadors in Moscow , Russia , on July 19, 2018 .

He said he had been unaware of the invite, but his office would brief Trump on the security issues involved.

Some in Trump's inner circle saw the Helsinki summit as problematic for the president and that he looked weak, another source close to Trump said, as he missed a chance to show strength in dealing with Putin by confronting him about the election interference. He did not spell out what they were.

He asserted Wednesday at the White House that no other American president has been as tough on Russia, citing US sanctions and the expulsion of alleged Russian spies from the U.S.

Among those Putin wants to question is former USA ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, a noted critic of the Russian president, and American-born financier Bill Browder, who successfully lobbied the US government to impose new sanctions on Russia.

The magazine also shared a video showing Trump morphing into Putin. He later added that the Russian apparatus is still attempting to undermine the democratic process in the US.

Russian Federation is promising to keep Iran away from Israel's borders, but as Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said Thursday there is reason to doubt whether they can deliver on that.

Coats learned of the proposed second meeting with Putin when the White House announced it on Twitter, while he was being interviewed at the Aspen conference.

Trump on Thursday also accused the news media - which he again dubbed the "enemy of the people" - of distorting the summit and pining for a confrontation between the U.S. and Russian Federation, blaming reporters even as much of the coverage this week has focused on Republicans' condemnations.
