Netflix’s new smart downloads will keep pace with your binging habits

Streaming-video giant Netflix is introducing a feature this week called "smart downloads", which deletes shows you've watched offline and automatically downloads the next episode for you.

TVLine reports that Netflix has added a new "smart download" feature to the Android version of the app, although there's no word on when it'll arrive for iPhones or iPads. The company has been fine-tuning its user interface to improve the process of discovering new shows, adding a "coming soon" feature to Android devices. Users of Netflix's Apple iOS apps will have to wait a few more months to get Smart Downloads. Under "Downloads", users will be able to turn Smart Downloads on or off.

The move is the latest evolution of Netflix's mobile experience, which has grown in importance since its first app launch in 2010.

If you'd rather keep shows stored in your phone to watch again and again, though, you can switch off smart downloads in settings anytime.

Many people know that I've had a special bond with this club growing up ", he said. "My family and a few of my friends are West Ham fans so everyone's buzzing".

Smart Downloads deletes Season 1, Episode 1, and automatically downloads Season 1, Episode 4.

Sadly there's still no one-stop option to download an entire season of a show, so if you're stocking up on episodes for a long flight, or a trip out somewhere with poor mobile coverage, you'll still need to do it manually. The download takes place only when a known Wi-Fi network is within reach, and Netflix will not use more storage, as it merely swaps out the old episode for the new one.

It's limited to episodic TV series, not movies, standup specials or other kinds of programming. There are more details on how to use the Smart Downloads feature and you can read all about it here.
