Mexican voters to pick president and more than 18,000 other officials

The sharp-tongued Lopez Obrador meanwhile ascended to the presidency on a vow to fight for a "radical turn" in Mexico, a country deluged in corruption scandals and ravaged by a bloody drug war.

Despite his affable approach towards Mexico's northern neighbor, Lopez Obrador's victory did little for the Peso.

Mexico's main stock index and the peso were both down Monday, but analysts at Banco Base attributed the currency's drop to broader global movement in favour of the US dollar and speculation about USA interest rates.

According to the first official projection, Ricardo Anaya of the conservative National Action Party (PAN) won between 22.1 and 22.8 percent, Jose Antonio Meade of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) between 15.7 and 16.3 percent, and independent candidate Jaime Rodriguez between 5.3 and 5.5 percent.

Lopez Obrador said he will propose that his own team of experts be included in the talks. Leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador - a known opponent to Trump policies - is now slated to be headed for the win. "I confess that I have a legitimate ambition: I want to go down in history as a good president of Mexico", he said after announcing his landslide victory.

After Trump won the election, Mexican attempts to please the new administration reached unprecedented levels.

Besides choosing their president for the next six years, Mexico's 88 million voters were electing both houses of Congress, with a total of more than 18,000 federal, state and local posts at stake.

Casting his ballot early Sunday at his polling station in Mexico City's Tlalpan district, he called the elections "historic". "They shouldn't dare commit a fraud, because if they do they will meet the devil", said Yeidckol Polevnsky, president of Lopez Obrador's Morena party.

"The revolution of consciences has triumphed", the victor told tens of thousands of jubilant supporters who had gathered on Mexico City's central Zocalo Square.

Just when you thought this World Cup might be running out of surprises, Russian Federation go and knock Spain out on penalties. England face Colombia in Moscow Tuesday with the victor to face Sweden or Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Mexicans have largely called for change in the run-up to these elections.

Former Mexico City mayor Obrador, who had already run for the presidency twice before, cast himself as an anti-establishment candidate prepared to crack down on corruption and to help the poor.

"We will search for a relationship with the USA government based on friendship and development, always inculcated with mutual respect and in defense of our compatriots, immigrants who live and work in that country", he said.

Anaya acknowledged in a televised speech that "the trend favors Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador".

Mexico recorded about 29,000 killings past year, the highest annual number since modern records started being kept two decades ago.

Compared with his predecessors, Lopez Obrador is likely to be more focused on domestic economic issues than on settling trade issues with the United States, O'Neil said.

A poll published in May by Seattle-based political research firm Latino Decisions showed that Lopez Obrador had a 23 percentage point lead over his closest rival among voting-age Mexican nationals living in the United States, especially those registered to vote by mail.

"It's worth cautioning that we still have little clarity on Amlo's economic policies", said Edward Glossop, an economist at Capital Economics.
