Jones snatches 1st Cup win in crash-filled race at Daytona

Saturday's win was the first Monster Energy Series win for Jones.

The win for Jones, 22, was a landmark moment for the Michigan-born driver, as he broke through to claim the victory in his first season and 57th start with Joe Gibbs racing.

That put the race into what NASCAR calls overtime because it couldn't end under caution.

STENHOUSE, LARSON CRASH: Kyle Larson lost control of his vehicle with 37 laps to go, apparently because of a tire issue, and his spin collected Stenhouse putting the field under caution for the sixth time.

"I didn't think we had a shot to win it there about halfway", Jones said.

STENHOUSE, AGAIN: Ricky Stenhouse Jr., the focus of much of the evening's caution activity, caused the eighth caution with 11 laps to go when damage on his auto caused a tire rub and eventually a tire failure. Stage two was also one by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. the rest of the top 10 on the stage included #34 Michael McDowell, #88 Alex Bowman, #95 Kasey Kahne, #13 Ty Dillon, #48 Jimmie Johnson, #42 Kyle Larson, #3 Austin Dillon, #6 Trevor Bayne and #31 Ryan Newman rounded out the top 10. "If he would've hit me, I would've tried to move or save it, but I never got hit. It's our first win and not much has felt better than this one".

British Grand Prix: Unhappy Lewis Hamilton points finger at Ferrari’s ‘interesting tactics’
Canadian Lance Stroll lost control on his very first flying lap, spinning at Brooklands, and ending up beached in the gravel. Sebastian Vettel fared well in second practice ahead of the British Grand Prix (Martin Rickett/PA).

Jones passed Martin Truex Jr., who finished second, on the final lap to take the lead and record his first ever win in the Cup series. The American automaker hasn't been to victory lane since and hadn't really gotten close to a checkered.

FIRST OVERTIME: Just before the leaders took the white flag, a multicar collision took out another set of contenders and brought out the red flag.

THE SECOND BIG ONE: The night's second major crash occurred on lap 65. He went crashing off Stenhouse's bumper and chaos ensued. Both JTG-Daugherty Racing cars finished in the top-five for the first time and it was the third straight race at Daytona that both finished in the top 10...

But the Roush Fenway Racing driver didn't feel a need to apologize. With 36 laps to go Larson had a tire go down and Stenhouse Jr. drove into the rear of the No. 42 Chevrolet. That crash ended their respective nights.

Twenty of the 40 cars were eliminated by accidents in Saturday's race. Jones battled back from damage sustained in a multicar wreck on Lap 65, an accident that cost him a lap. "I made the mistake of lifting instead of just driving through him, and that's my fault". I know better than that. Thanks to a push from Chris Buescher, Jones was able to get ahead of Truex Jr. and stretched the advantage to a couple of vehicle lengths as the field raced through Turns 3 and 4. I thought we were out of it and all of a sudden we were right back in it, take the lead and ran away.

Notes: Stenhouse won the first and second stages, garnering his first playoff points of the season, before sustaining serious damage in a Lap 124 wreck.
