Google Duplex could eventually make its way into call centers

Citing a person familiar with Google's plans, the site reports that Google is in conversation with an unnamed large insurance company to integrate the conversational AI in handling customer service calls. Reports indicate that at least one insurance company is eyeing Duplex to handle routine calls. Backlash eventually made Google promise that Duplex will tell people they are speaking with AI, but the company still has a way to go to ease everyone's worries.

Google has refuted the report.

Google, though, has since issued a denial that it's working on any "enterprise" use cases for Google Duplex, and for the time being is concentrating on a limited number of consumer uses - booking appointments at hair salons and restaurants, for example.

Earlier this year, Google unveiled Duplex - an AI personal assistant with convincingly human speech patterns, capable of calling shops and restaurants on behalf of its users. Which is why the tech giant thinks its Duplex AI - which sounds so human and can imitate the quirks of human speech so well that it's nearly creepy - would be a ideal addition to call centers.

Japan executes sarin gas attack cult leader Shoko Asahara and six members
Some survivors of the cult's crimes opposed the executions, saying they would end hopes for a fuller explanation of the crimes. Five were executed for their role in Tokyo subway attack, while another was executed for his role in the group's other crimes.

We're now focused on consumer use cases for the Duplex technology and we aren't testing Duplex with any enterprise clients.

Applying Google Duplex in call centers could be very lucrative for the search giant. It's important that we get the experience right and we're taking a slow and measured approach as we incorporate learnings and feedback from our tests. If Google AI would make it easier on the caller, would this not be a good thing for everyone?

However, the same powerful technology has a flip side for some, as it now appears capable to take away the jobs of telemarketing professionals and call-center operators. The idea is that the Duplex AI would be able to handle basic calls and assist customers with problems and questions. Don't forget: Google Assistant was used to shoot a gun recently. In fact, ethical concerns have apparently slowed down work on the product. The primary critique is that even in a call center setting customers would be unaware they are talking to a machine and feel subsequently deceived.
