British Prime Minister Theresa May has pitched for an "unprecedented" free trade deal with the United States after Brexit with a promise to tear down "bureaucratic barriers" to trade as she hosted a lavish welcome dinner for President Donald Trump at the Blenheim Palace.

If May went ahead with the "soft Brexit" plan outlined last Friday - that led to the resignation of Johnson as foreign secretary and Brexit secretary David Davis - it will "kill" any prospect of a US-UK trade deal, Trump warned in the interview conducted in Brussels before he flew into Stansted airport.

Trump is not the first USA president to intervene on Brexit - Barack Obama warned ahead of the 2016 referendum that if it left the EU, Britain would be at the "back of the queue" for a U.S. deal. There was a minor scuffle between pro-Trump supporters and police Friday, but the main marches to welcome the president are due to be held Saturday.

They also said Trump was "being undiplomatic and really like a golf club bore".

Trump later dismissed the Sun story as "fake news", at a news conference at Chequers, Prime Minister Theresa May's country retreat. The newspaper released lengthy clips of the interview that showed Trump saying that May did not take his advice on how to handle Brexit, saying she "wrecked it".

Paul Fonseca, 23, said: "I think it's hilarious. He obviously likes me, and says very good things about me", Trump said.

Asked about that interview, Mr Trump said he had not criticised Ms May, lavishing praise on "a terrific woman", who was smart, tough and capable. "The deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one people voted on".

She said they would discuss "the real opportunities" on a United States trade deal, as well as foreign, defence and security issues "where we work really closely together".

The president also returned to his feud with the London mayor Sadiq Khan, who he previously sparred with via Twitter in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on London in 2017.

She attacked his "divisive, dog-whistle rhetoric" on migration, adding: "If signing up to the #Trump world view is the price of a deal, it's not worth paying". "I wish they put it in the headline", he told reporters while standing beside May.

Addressing the 100-strong group the Prime Minister said there was an "unprecedented" opportunity to do a deal that boosted jobs and growth in both countries.

Most Britons support President Donald Trump's visit to the United Kingdom, a new poll has found.

The president also praised Boris Johnson, who just resigned as Britain's foreign secretary earlier this week because he did not approve of May's negotiations over Brexit. I think that " s why Brexit happened".

"I used to love London as a city", Trump continued in the interview published on Thursday. "Whatever you do is OK with me", Trump told the press conference.

"I think it changed the fabric of Europe and, unless you act very quickly, it's never going to be what it was and I don't mean that in a positive way". A protest was expected to take place near Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, the venue for President Trump " s black-tie dinner with Theresa May.
