World Cup 2026 awarded to USA, Canada and Mexico

The joint ticket of the United States, Canada and Mexico won 134 votes, compared to 65 for Morocco, at a Fifa Congress in Moscow where this year's World Cup kicks off on Thursday.

It is limited to 15 minutes, with bidding rival Morocco to follow at the Moscow Expocentre.

"We're looking forward to putting this soccer city on the world's greatest sporting stage".

Fox Sports COO Eric Shanks told FOX Business it's a big win for soccer in North America. "Canada, Mexico, and the United States are ready to welcome the world to North America and serve as stewards of the largest FIFA World Cup™ in history".

"Hosting a FIFA World Cup™ is an extraordinary honor and privilege", said Steven Reed, President of Canada Soccer and Co-Chair of the United Bid.

If the US wants to show off during the World Cup, which every country that hosts it does, Mount Rainier mixed with the Puget Sound and Seattle skyline is a fool-proof crowd-pleaser.

But it would be wrong to criticise this too readily as a basis for the decision, which England's FA voted for too, given that the Qatar vote was so ridiculed partly because the tiny Gulf emirate had no stadiums ready and has had to undertake a vast construction project.

The "United Bid" had been favourites from the start but Morocco's promise of a "European World Cup in Africa" was appealing to the committee.

Herdman said there is precedent for the nations involved in joint bids being granted entry, pointing to Japan and South Korea in 2002. With three host countries, it would be natural to give all three host sides a Day 1 showcase.

Trump vents anger on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, European Union and Canada's Trudeau
A few hours earlier, Trudeau had told reporters that all seven leaders had come together to sign a joint declaration. Trudeau's office said he had not said anything in his closing G7 news conference he has not said to Trump before.

"We always had a very clear pathway to victory, we had that for some time and that basically triggered the strategy of trying to figure out how we get there", Cordeiro said.

Two venues - the University of Victoria and Royal Athletic Park - are mentioned specifically in the bid book.

Social media exploded after several reports, including one in the New York Times, said Wednesday that MetLife Stadium is hosting the final. The United bid plans to use 16 from a list of 23 - 17 of which are deemed just fine the way they are, with six needing renovation.

North American officials have promised to deliver $14 billion in revenue from the event.

Hard numbers aside, it is a vote with Gibraltar having the same say as China. The last time Federation Internationale de Football Association voted on World Cup hosting rights was in 2010, the decision rested with the former executive committee which chose Russia to host the 2018 finals and Qatar for 2022.

It marks the fifth time the North African country has failed to secure the right to host the worldwide football tournament. Victor Montagliani, the Canadian who leads CONCACAF, wants them to take three of the seven guaranteed qualification slots reserved for the region as host.

USA star forward Abby Wambach, now retired, was front and centre in the human rights challenge. But given the increase in the size of the field and FIFA's desire to squeeze every buck out of the tournament, it would be shocking if the host countries were not front and centre.

Taking no chances, Montopoli is pulling out his lucky charm.
