The Golden State Warriors have become the National Basketball Association champions after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0 in the finals.

The Cavaliers came back from a 2-0 deficit in the 2016 NBA Finals to win the Championship in Game 7 and did not allow the Warriors sweep them past year.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors in clinching the title - the team's sixth overall and third in four years - with 37 points, four rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks. As a team, the Cavaliers shot just 43 percent from the field and nine of 31 from the three-point line which was good enough to keep them in the game due to their defense, but they just had no answer for Kevin Durant who scorched them for a game-high 43 points on 15 of 23 shooting. Yet Golden State won anyway with relative ease because Durant took over the game, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the Warriors' scoring output while also leading the team in rebounds (13) and assists (7).

The result also kicks off what will be the true drama of the NBA in 2018 - an offseason in which Cavs' superstar LeBron James is widely expected to ditch his hometown team and join some other franchise as he tries to improve his 3-6 record in the NBA Finals.

The Cavs know a little bit about rewriting Finals history as they did stun the Warriors in 2016 when they became the first team to rally from a 3-1 series deficit to win the title.

"We knew they were going to come out with a tough first punch". For the entire postseason, James shot 34% on over five attempts per game.

The weight of expectations have hung over this team from the moment the Warriors added Kevin Durant to a team that won an NBA-record 73 games two years ago. The Warriors and the Cavaliers each scored 27 points in the frame, but Golden State still held a 61-52 lead at the break.

James scored 51 points in that game, and wasn't able to recapture his form in the subsequent three contests. Durant said. "We won two championships. We want to keep this thing going as long as we can". "Whether you live up to it or not, you've got to be OK with your effort and your intensity and whatnot and the result of the game", Curry said. Smith's decision to dribble the ball out to the perimeter in the final seconds of regulation in Game 1 likely cost Cleveland that game. It was revealed after the loss that he played through a right hand contusion, which was a byproduct of punching a whiteboard following a heartbreaking Game 1.

At 33, James might have played his final game for the Cavaliers. The way we played, the calls that were made throughout the course of that game, and I had emotions that the game was taken away from us.

During his postgame press conference on Friday following the Golden State Warriors' sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers, James admitted to the injury and donned his cast.

James was subbed out for Cedi Osman with 4:03 remaining, shook hands with a few of the Warriors players on his way to the bench, and walked off the court shortly after time expired.

"Whether it's opponents, whether it's different coaches panning for us, whether it's the fans, the media that hate us, it feels good when you're the team that everybody's gunning for", said Durant. He has stated multiple times he will re-sign with the Warriors this summer.
