US poised to announce exit from UN human rights council

Sheila Gewolb, Senior Vice President of the Board of Deputies said: "We welcome the Foreign Secretary's bold, clear and important intervention at the UN Human Rights Council".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley are scheduled to publicly discuss the decision at 5 p.m.

Washington's pullout would be the latest USA rejection of multilateral engagement after it pulled out of the Paris climate agreement and the Iran nuclear deal.

The move comes as the Trump administration is under intense criticism from business groups, human rights organizations and lawmakers from both parties over its recently imposed decision to separate children from parents who enter the United States illegally. In a speech to the council a year ago, Haley called out the body for what she said was its "relentless, pathological campaign" against Israel. In addition to concerns about agenda items singling out Israel, the U.S. also wanted more stringent criteria for membership and the ability to kick countries that have egregious human rights records off the council. Nevertheless, the move will add to concerns that the United States is, under Trump, retreating from its leading position as an global advocate for human rights.

The NBA's Top Pick Has Been Traded
Others think that he’ll continue to use the picks himself and construct a young core that can emerge after the Cavaliers vs. Fultz is an ideal scoring guard to run alongside him, and can also take over point guard duties if the Simmons experiment fails.

She denounced the council as a "forum for politics, hypocrisy and evasion" and accused member countries such as Venezuela, Cuba, China, Burundi and Saudi Arabia of failing to fulfill their duties to "uphold the highest standards" of human rights, while emphasizing what she said was the council's anti-Israel bias.

In March 2011, the U.N. General Assembly unanimously suspended Libya's membership in the council because of violence against protesters by forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. USA membership also led to a sharp decrease in the number of special sessions that focused exclusively on Israel's treatment of the Palestinians.

Under the presidency of George W. Bush, the United States declined to join the council, questioning how different it would be than the commission.

Bloomberg notes that a USA withdrawal from the 47-member council based in Geneva was expected. Item 7 on "Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories" has been part of the council's regular business nearly as long as it has existed. "The HRC [Human Rights Council] consistently ignores the worst human rights abuses in the world proving it is not an honest broker". The Obama administration sought a seat only in 2009 in an effort to showcase how human rights were an important aspect of USA foreign policy.
