Trump defends separating families at US border, ‘politically correct or not’

In another tweet on Tuesday, Trump accused Democrats of letting illegal immigrants, including gang members, "pour into and infest" the USA to court their votes. By saying he supported the compromise bill, a fierce effort from the office of House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.), and urging lawmakers to vote for it, the president calmed the waters somewhat in a fraught vote-whipping process.

As for Congress, Hurd was dismayed that legislation is needed at all.

Mr Trump said he would not allow the USA to become a "migrant camp".

Nielsen and other Trump administration officials say the separations are necessary to enforce immigration laws and have called on Congress to change the laws. Until now, the party faced divisions over the issue, with 10 Democratic senators up for re-election in states Trump won facing a much different calculation from the House challengers in the 23 GOP-held seats in districts that Hillary Clinton won in 2016.

GOP leaders scrambled Tuesday to produce a revised version of the broader immigration bill that would keep children in detention longer than now permitted - but with their parents.

But they are running up against Mr Trump's shifting views on specifics and his determination, according to advisers, not to look soft on immigration or his signature border wall.

Trump said Tuesday that current law gives his administration only two options for handling people who cross the border illegally: "Totally open borders or criminal prosecution".

But some worry the lack of a clear resolution could exacerbate an already tough situation as his party heads toward the mid-terms.

"If you don't have borders, you don't have a country!" he argued. Recent polls show two-thirds of Americans oppose the family separation policy, which Trump has falsely blamed on Democrats.

"The separation of children from parents who desire only to claim some portion of the American dream has become a nightmare for them and for those of us who know in our hearts that this is not what America is about".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in April that the administration would take a "zero tolerance" approach to illegal immigration, directing all USA attorneys who serve in districts along the United States' southern border with Mexico to criminally prosecute all cases of attempted illegal entry or illegal entry that are referred by DHS.

NHS spending boost will increase burden of taxation, says Jeremy Hunt
Labour is pledging a 5 per cent increase this year and we are being honest with how we will pay for it. The PM has just announced a grand new plan to invest in the National Health Service.

Under the policy, adults who try to cross into the US illegally, many of whom plan to seek asylum, are placed in custody and undergo criminal prosecution.

There are 100 sites scattered across 17 states.

Since the policy went into effect, more than 2,200 children have been isolated from their parents, and many are now housed in crowed shelters - prompting fury from religious leaders, immigrant advocates, and child health specialists alike. Instead, the children could be detained indefinitely with their parents.

"We want to end the border crisis by finally giving us the legal authorities and the resources to detain and remove illegal immigrant families all together and bring them back to their country", he said.

Cruz's bill would double the number of federal immigration judges, authorize new temporary shelters to house migrant families and limit the processing of asylum cases to no more than 14 days - a goal immigrant advocates say would be hard to meet.

More than 2,300 minors were separated from their families at the border from May 5 through June 9, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

"The only way to guarantee on an issue this complicated that we get a fix is for it to be a narrow solution, targeted to this particular problem", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said on Tuesday.

"There's no need for legislation".

Many in Congress, including many Trump supporters, say he is wrong. "You have that environment, with so many important policies to be discussed, and the president takes time to do that".

Trump's policy does not seem to be diminishing his popularity among his supporters, including Jesse Bernal, a 38-year-old youth pastor in Morgan Hill who says the border crisis is being exaggerated by a liberal media.
