The information on contributing factors reflect what family and friends told coroners and police in a subgroup of states participating in the CDC's National Violent Death Reporting System.

Despite the steadiness of the suicide rate in the state, Allen says there is a lot of work to do.

Middle-aged adults - ages 45 to 64 - had the largest rate increase, rising to 19.2 per 100,000 in 2016 from 13.2 per 100,000 in 1999.

"We do have a high suicide rate", said Egan. North Dakota reported the biggest jump, at 57.6 percent. The World Health Organization estimates a global suicide rate of one death every 40 seconds, which by 2020 they predict will increase to one every 20 seconds.

The latest report, released Thursday, found that 45,000 people died by suicide in 2018.

Solutions for curbing the suicide rate include states and communities identifying and supporting those at risk, teaching coping and problem solving skills, promoting safe and supportive environments, and offering more activities to bring people together.

Many people who died by suicide, according to the report, had recently experienced hard life events such as relationship problems, physical ailments, financial stress and job or home loss.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, 92, had eye surgery last month
A cataract is what happens when the lens in your eye, which is a small transparent disc inside the eye, develops cloudy patches. During the operation, a tiny cut is made in the eye to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear plastic one.

"Suicide is a leading cause of death for Americans - and it's a tragedy for families and communities across the country", CDC Principal Deputy Director Anne Schuchat said. Even New Jersey, with a relatively low rate of 9.2 per 100,000, still saw an increase.

The study also found that 54% of individuals who killed themselves had not been diagnosed with a mental-health condition.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death and one of just three leading causes that are on the rise. Little says, "It takes more courage to reach out for help than it does to suffer in silence". Approximately half of such deaths involve the use of a firearm.

Preventing suicide requires help from all sectors of society, the researchers said.

Professor Julie Cerel, president of the American Association of Suicidology, expressed the view that having better reporting standards could account for some of the increase, but also pointed to a lack of adequate funding for mental health research and preventative care.

The National Suicide prevention hotline is 1-800-273-8255 or you can text "HOME" to 7-4-1-7-4-1.

Also in that map is a clear pattern of high suicide rates in the Plains and Mountain states; this is partly due to lack of access to mental health professionals as well as a stigma about mental illness in rural counties but notably also a lack of access to good jobs and economic success.
