Sanford loss magnifies 'Trump effect' on GOP primaries

On Wednesday, "The View" co-host Joy Behar suggested that it was impossible for Republican primary candidates to authentically support President Donald Trump.

Rep. Mark Sanford, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who's been outspoken against the President, suffered a stunning primary defeat in his SC district Tuesday, just hours after Trump blasted the congressman on Twitter and publicly supported his opponent. He was projected as the victor thanks to some help from Trump: The president shooed his biggest challenger, activist Danny Tarkanian, out of the race.

It is fitting, perhaps, that the Republican Party's turn towards Trump's economic nationalism has coincided with Johnson departing the party to become a Libertarian and Sanford being tossed from its ranks. Jeff Flake, a fierce critic of the President who decided not to run for re-election in Arizona. It was reiterated last night.

In Virginia, a state senator favoured by the Virginia Democratic Party establishment won a crowded battle for the right to challenge one of the most endangered congressional Republicans in November's elections. It's the President's script.

Arrington's campaign was based on the premise that Sanford - who has criticized Trump's style and questioned his knowledge - is insufficiently supportive of the President.

"Mark Sanford and the career politicians cheated on us", Arrington says in the ad. "Congrats to Katie Arrington!" the president wrote.

Sanford had been critical of Trump at times, saying he "fanned the flames" of intolerance and decrying his disregard for facts.

It may have bit him in the end.

"Unlike you, Mark has shown humility in his role and a desire to be a better man than he was the day before", Representative Amash said on Twitter. "I thought Mark was very principled".

In Nevada, the race to replace outgoing Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval features primaries in both parties.

The only places with a higher housing wage than MA are Maryland, New York, California, Washington D.C. and Hawaii. The National Low Income Housing Coalition released its annual report on wages and the cost of rental housing.

In Maine, some uncertainty surrounded a contest among candidates to replace outgoing Republican Governor Paul LePage, who said he might not certify election results because he opposes a new voting format.

"I think that we serve at the pleasure of the people that we have the honor of serving", he said. "We've seen this in earlier races in earlier primaries".

Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., who clashes frequently with party leaders, responded to Trump's tweet with one of his own defending Sanford.

The outcome is a cautionary tale for Republicans in Congress who try to work with Trump while also maintaining their independence. "But it tells us we need to bring a little more civility in how we actually do that".

Yes, that reference to Argentina is the thrice-wedded president (who may have had an affair with a porn star) accusing Sanford of being bad at marriage, apparently without a hint of irony. "I have some differences with the way we're handling tariffs, but I haven't gone out and aired those differences to the media first", he said. "(Trump) tweets when he wants to tweet", the White House aide added.

Tarkanian, who lost the 3rd Congressional District to Rosen in 2016, plunged back into that race and raised four times as much money as his closest challenger.

But two sources familiar with the situation said Trump was indeed referring to his "internal team" when he blamed nameless "representatives" for trying to keep him from going after Sanford.

"I don't think you stand on a street corner and throw rocks at the President", he said.

"I would start by praising the president ... and then say, 'But here's an issue in my local area where I have some disagreement or I'd like to be something different, '" Collins said.

On Tuesday night, Sanford called Trump's decision to weigh in on the race "fairly unusual", but nevertheless remained steadfast that he is "neither for nor against Trump". "I wear it as a badge of honor, because I do love, believe in, and want to support liberty".
