Reach out to those who may be struggling

"We need to intervene in both mental and public health cases", Dr Reed says.

In a dizzying week that saw two celebrities taking their own lives, phone numbers for suicide hotlines were ubiquitous: published by news outlets and plastered across social media, with reminders to reach out to places like the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for help.

Suicide rates have been rising for years - by 25 percent nationally and 27 percent in ME over that last two decades, across age, gender, race and ethnicity, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nevada's rate actually went down slightly, the only exception, but still had one of the highest rates.

In 2016, almost 45,000 Americans 10 or older died by suicide, according to the CDC.

Men's suicide rates are still higher than women's overall, however, and there's been a troublingly steep increase in suicides of men from age 45 to 64 as well.

Take the time to learn the warning signs of suicide.

Another recent example of this was with the release of the highly controversial Netflix drama series 13 Reasons Why, which depicts the suicide of a high school student - and which, according to one study, prompted a swift 20 percent rise in Google queries about suicide. Arkansas' rate was just outside the top 10, at 21.2 per 100,000 people. But such an approach would require changes in the way much of the medical community views mental health disorders. Tens of millions of us-about one in every five Americans-live among you every day without you knowing that we have a mental illness.

A rejection might have chilled possible multibillion-dollar deals involving other media companies. AT&T has said it expects to find $1 billion in synergies in the first three years of the deal.

"This is the period where we are most likely to juggle the complications of aging family members or come face to face with the outcomes of financial risks you took that didn't pay off". Sometimes that's because those people were never diagnosed, but there are other factors besides mental health that can awaken suicidal tendencies. "The Lifeline has been proven to de-escalate moments of crisis and help people find hope".

In a nation that's become so highly partisan, it seems we've forgotten that we should be looking out for our fellow man-not just the ones who agree with us. "So if someone [who took their own life] was married, had three kids, had these likes and these hobbies, somebody else can then put themselves in the narrative and say, 'That's my life'".

In the wake of several shocking celebrity deaths, suicide has been a national talking point.

We can do that much, can't we?

"I wish there would have been more help available for my son", she said.

Despite mountains of data accumulated by the CDC through programs such as the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS), there is no obvious answer as to why the rate of suicide has increased so dramatically. Since December, Arkansas has had a local office to field calls (Wyoming is now the only state without one), so can better direct callers to resources in the state that can help, which could be the difference between life and death.
