Proposal To Split California Qualifies For Ballot

This fall, California voters will decide if the Golden State should be split into three separate states.

This comes after the group behind the idea, Cal 3, gathered enough support and delivered more than 600,000 signatures to the Secretary of State.

California (new): This would include six counties: Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and San Benito counties.

Northern California, containing the 40 northern-most counties - including Sacramento and San Franciso - stretching from the OR border to Merced County.

And Southern California, moving from Mono County along the state's eastern and southern borders to San Diego, and including Fresno and Kern counties.

If the measure is approved by voters, the governor will transfer the notice of state approval to Congress, which will vote to ratify the creation of the new three-state structure.

Dakota, Virginia and Carolina could soon be joined by California. It received more than 402,468 valid signatures, more than the amount required by state law, thanks to an ambitious campaign, called Cal 3, and financial backing from the early investor in Tesla, Skype, and Hotmail.

"To create three states from a standing start, you'll get all the benefits of knowing all the things that worked in the past, and all the things that could work in the future and you get to eliminate all the baggage you got in the state", Draper said in a May news conference at Draper University.

Steven Maviglio, spokesman for One California, an organization opposing the 3-state proposal, said dividing the state would be costly and problematic for residents. Southern California depends more on manufacturing and wholesale, and has a median household income of $45,000.

Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st, legislators put forth various proposals to split California in half or in thirds but none ever quite gained enough momentum.

This isn't the first time that Draper attempted to get an initiative to break apart the most populous state.

"Three states will get us better infrastructure, better education and lower taxes", he explained.
