Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo Shatters Nürburgring Nordschleife Lap Record

On May 28 in 1983, Stefan Bellof lapped the world-renowned track with a Porsche 956 C in a legendary time of 6:11.13 minutes. With a 2.0-liter turbocharged V4 engine paired to a hybrid system, the 919 Hybrid Evo delivers a total output of 1,160 hp.

As previously reported by Wheels, the 919 Evo's job is not yet done, with more lap records in Porsche's sights.

That's the time put down by Timo Bernhard in the 919 Evo at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, utterly obliterating the 35-year-old record held by Stefan Bellof. The folks over at Bridge to Gantry have been following Porsche's progress with the unrestricted version of its race auto in the company's quest to establish a new record for the fastest vehicle around the 'Ring.

Timo Bernhard is a two-time Le Mans 24 Hours victor and en-titre World Endurance champion.

Stuttgart. With 5 minutes and 19.55 seconds on the stopwatch Timo Bernhard (37, Germany) crossed the finish line of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife this morning at the wheel of the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. Porsche also increased aerodynamics with a larger front diffuser, new rear wing, and fixed height side skirts, contributing to a 53 percent increase in downforce. The auto reached 230mph on the Döttinger Höhe straight but it was its speed through the circuit's 73 corners that beggared belief.

Last April, Porsche took the 919 Hybrid Evo with Neel Jani behind the wheel to Spa Francorchamps, where it also broke the overall lap record with a 1:14.770, beating the previous record set by Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes F1 auto.

Mark Webber is set to drive the 919 Evo at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
