Pope accepts resignation of bishop at heart of Chilean abuse scandal

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of a controversial figure at the center of Chile's child sex abuse scandal along with two other bishops, according to the Vatican.

Barros submitted his resignation to Pope Francis alongside every other active bishop in Chile at the close of a May 15-17 meeting between the pope and Chilean prelates, during which Francis chastised the bishops for systematic cover-up of abuse throughout the country.

A short time later, the Vatican announced Pope Francis was sending Archbishop Scicluna and Fr Bertomeu to Chile to listen to people with information about Bishop Barros.

The third exiting priest, Bishop Cristian Caro of Puerto Montt, stands accused by some Catholics of having misinformed Francis on the allegations against Barros.

Pope Francis has promised Chilean Catholics scarred by a culture of clergy sexual abuse that "never again" would the Church ignore them or the cover-up of abuse in their country.

Under Pope Francis, a Vatican committee has been set up to fight sexual abuse and help victims.

Several members of the Church hierarchy, including Barros, are accused by victims of ignoring and covering up years of child abuse by Chilean pedophile priest Fernando Karadima during the 1980s and 1990s.

Pope Francis initially backed him, refusing to allow Barros to step down from his post and calling accusations against him "calumny" during a visit to Chile in January.

"This is huge not only for the Chilean church but for the entire world", Juan Carlos Cruz, a Chilean abuse survivor who helped lead a campaign pressuring the Vatican to take action, said in a phone interview, echoing public comments from other victims and church-reform advocates. Now 87 and living in a nursing home in Chile, he has always denied any wrongdoing.

Victims accused Barros of knowing about what they said was Karadima's abusive behavior but doing nothing to stop it or report it to church authorities.

It is not yet known how many, if any, more of Chile's bishops will depart from office.

In 2015, the Pope had received an eight-page letter that graphically detailed sexual abuse at the hands of a Chilean priest, then denied ever getting it. He named a temporary leader for each diocese.

Of the three, only one, the 61-year-old Barros, is below the retirement age of 75.

The Catholic Church's upcoming big family rally in Ireland will feature workshops on hot-button issues facing Catholic families, including priestly sexual abuse, weathering divorce and ministering to lesbian and gay faithful.

"He (the pope) said, "I was part of the problem, I caused this", Cruz added.

The pope accepted Barros' resignation despite his earlier attempts to defend him.
