North Korea says Trump agreed on step-by-step denuclearization process

South Korea will be looking for clarity from Mike Pompeo on key security issues raised by the Trump-Kim summit, when the U.S. secretary of state visits Seoul on Wednesday.

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", he tweeted.

But Panetta, who previously worked for President Barack Obama, said there are a "huge number of issues" that will actually involve the denuclearization of North Korea, which owns an estimated 20 to 60 nuclear weapons with about 141 sites that can produce them.

Trump announced Tuesday at a press conference in Singapore that he and Kim had reached an agreement on North Korea's denuclearization, although the text of that agreement was light on details, including a timeline for that process and how verification would work. USA defense analysts have said Kim retains as many as 60 nuclear bombs and a range of missiles, including some he says can strike the U.S.

He had been imprisoned in North Korea from January 2016 after being sentenced to 15 years of hard labour for trying to steal an item bearing a propaganda slogan from his hotel, North Korea state media said. "No longer - sleep well tonight!"

The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the Korean War in the 1950s and has used them in a variety of drills.

Pyongyang also confirmed Trump's declaration on Tuesday that the United States would halt joint military drills with South Korea.

The country was as surprised as anyone by President Donald Trump's sudden announcement in Singapore that the United States would be "stopping the war games" - the joint military exercises it regularly carries out with South Korea.

The key number is 104 but there is also the freakish and unprecedented scenario where both bids get rejected. Allied with that unpredictability came an unpalatable presence at the heart of the United bid - U.S.

Talks are to be led on the USA side by Pompeo and, according to the agreement, a "relevant, high-level" North Korean official. "By the way, Korean stuffed cucumber is stuffed with Koreans - Kim is a monster".

While Pyongyang says it has intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach the U.S. mainland, Guam is in reach of medium-to-long-range rockets.

North Korean state media lauded the summit as a resounding success, highlighting concessions made by the USA president.

The summit's joint declaration said that Pompeo and North Korean officials would hold further talks "at the earliest possible date". Pompeo is also due to meet the South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers.

Pompeo said Wednesday that Trump "made it very clear that the condition precedent for the exercises not to proceed was productive, good-faith negotiations being ongoing".

During the Hannity interview, Trump claimed that Kim agreed to terms that, for some reason, didn't make it into the actual written agreement. "Secretary Pompeo and the other diplomats who will lead these talks no doubt have a lot of challenging tasks ahead of them, not only in getting North Korea to agree to significant follow-up measures, but in keeping Washington, Seoul and Beijing on the same page as each pursues bilateral engagement with Pyongyang", Daniel Wertz, associate director of the National Committee on North Korea, told Newsweek. Mr Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government on the talks.

About 29,000 U.S. soldiers are based in the South, under a security agreement reached after the war ended in 1953. "Many people in the world will think of this as a scene from a fantasy...science fiction movie", Kim Jong-un was heard telling Donald Trump. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.

Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong said that the joint statement "is a crucial first move in the long journey towards lasting peace and stability on a denuclearised Korean Peninsula, which would benefit our region and the rest of the world".
