Jaguar Land Rover moves Discovery production from Solihull to Slovakia

'The potential losses of some agency employed staff in the United Kingdom is a tough one but forms part of our long-term manufacturing strategy as we transform our business globally, ' JLR said in a statement.

Despite the production move, JLR has said it will spend millions to retool its Solihull plant to produce electric vehicles after it announced plans to electrify all new models by 2020.

Why is Land Rover moving Discovery production to Slovakia?

The British report added that although Land Rover had yet to indicate whether the upcoming second-generation Evoque would be offered in coupé guise, this latest development suggested it "almost certainly" wouldn't be. The Solihull plant employs around 10,000 staff, and between 500 and 1,000 agency staff.

While a blow for United Kingdom manufacturing, Land Rover is adamant that it's committed to working in the United Kingdom - and the production switch will actually mean further reinvestment in the Solihull plant.

Jaguar Land Rover is set to cut more jobs in Britain as it moves all production of its Discovery SUV to lower-cost Slovakia before building its new Range Rover at an English factory.

These will be the next Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which will be built on an all-new architecture.

The slump came as demand for diesel vehicles dropped, while the auto maker also blamed uncertainty over Brexit and vehicle taxation.

In May, JLR announced a slight fall in pre-tax profits for the year ending in March (while pre tax profits for the quarter ending March fell sharply), pointing to "external headwinds". It also blamed uncertainty over Brexit and vehicle taxation.

In 2014 the automaker started production outside the United Kingdom for the first time when versions of the Rover Range Rover Evoque started rolling out of a plant in China.

JLR said in 2016 that it would build Discovery SUVs in Slovakia once the new plant there came on line, while saying some of the production of the model - which was redesigned in 2017 - would remain in the UK.

However, the move has also been welcomed locally as a step for the manufacturer to upgrade the Solihull plant to build new, electric models.

David Bailey, the professor of industrial strategy at Aston University, said it has raised hopes that the JLR's first electric auto - the I-Pace - will be built in Britain.
