Greek govt faces no-confidence vote on Macedonia name deal

However, the deal has triggered strong criticism from opposition parties in both countries and Macedonia's president has said he will not sign it.

The foreign ministers of Macedonia and Greece plan to sign the deal this weekend. If it passes Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov will need to ratify it.

In Skopje, Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov had said before the deal was announced that he opposed writing the new name into the constitution, a move meant to show the change is permanent and binding for domestic and worldwide use.

"This is an agreement that benefits (Greece) and the region", Tsipras said late Thursday in a televised interview on state TV ERT.

Zaev and Tsipras have agreed that the former Yugoslav republic should be renamed North Macedonia, ending a disagreement that had prevented it from joining global institutions such as NATO and had poisoned bilateral relations since the early 1990s.

Under the agreement announced by the two countries' prime ministers Tuesday, the country will be renamed North Macedonia.

The dispute was deadlocked for years, but hope for a resolution was rekindled after left-wing Zoran Zaev became Macedonia's prime minister last year, replacing conservative Nikola Gruevski who had served as prime minister for a decade. Hardliners on both sides are arguing that their prime ministers conceded too much to reach the deal.

And Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said after talks with Ivanov that, in the light of the deal with Greece, Bulgaria should seek to revise aspects of the friendship pact it signed with Macedonia previous year.

Defense Minister Panos Kammenos, Defense Minister and leader oft he Independent Greeks, has opposed Tsipras's Macedonia name deal and has not yet signaled whether this conflict would lead him to support the no-confidence vote. Greek opponents of the deal were planning a protest in Athens Friday, when Tsipras is set to brief parliament on details of the deal.

"For my whole life I've been called Marica, it would be the same as if someone would force me now to change my name".

The name dispute, which has so far barred Macedonia from becoming a member state to global institutions such as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the European Union (EU), has triggered strong nationalist sentiments and strained the two countries' bilateral ties since the small Balkan country declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

Tsipras has said he does not expect that to happen.

Main opposition New Democracy is expected to file a no-confidence motion against the government as early as Thursday. Macedonia will also amend its Constitution to reflect the change as part of the deal. "It was high time for the problem to be solved".

Opponents in Greece object to any use of the term "Macedonia" in their northern neighbor's name.

The possibility of Macedonia joining the European Union edged a step closer after it agreed to change its name to end a 27-year dispute with Greece.
