Frustrated Phil Mickelson swats moving ball with putter at Open

CURTIS STRANGE: You're really admired around this golfing world, especially here at the US Open. That made for a 14, a total of 83 in the first round, and a withdrawal.

Mickelson's bogey putt at Shinnecock Hills' par-four 13th skated past the cup and was heading down a slope when he trotted after it and batted it back toward the hole with his putter. He then jogged after it and tapped it back up towards the hole.

In one of his most weird moments in a career full of them, Mickelson intentionally hit a moving ball on the 13 hole to prevent it from racing off the front of the green. "It's covered under 14-5".

It's a black eye for Phil, at least according to the announcers at today's U.S. Open. But wouldn't a more logical rule have been 1-2, which dictates that "a player must not take an action with the intent to influence the movement of a ball in play?"

Serious breaches of this rule could result in disqualification. And I would gladly take the two shots over continuing that display.

Johnston, who went 12 over, said he and Mickelson could not help but laugh over the contentious incident as they struggled in such demanding conditions. I took the two-shot penalty and moved on.

I don't mean any disrespect.

In a later huddle with reporters he added critics should "toughen up". The crowd was singing, "Happy Birthday".

But four bogeys in a row from the eighth had virtually put paid to any kind of comeback over the weekend before the freaky scene on 13.

Fun facts about FIFA World Cup every football fan should know
An FA spokesperson said: "We congratulate the USA, Canada and Mexico on winning the bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup ". Yet he didn't lose hope, saying, "The world still looks at Africa as an underdog, but we can't afford to give up".

Mickelson took a 10 on the hole with the penalty and finished the day with an 81 that left him at 17 over for the tournament.

Johnston told BBC Radio 5 Live: "His body acted quicker than his brain".

"It's something you might see at your home course with your mates or something". "I was playing it worse than most, and I wanted to get to the next hole eventually, which I did".

"It's brutal out there and he was upset the way he played the previous holes. It's just like, 'Let's just play golf and try not to get emotionally attached to what's happening man". "I've had it with the USGA and the way they run their tournaments".

After misfiring long with his approach, his pitch shot carried over the green, then he chipped past the flag again. "When you've a championship which comes down to sheer luck, that's not right".

Mickelson, who has been a U.S. Open runner-up six times, most recently in 2013, was having a miserable time Saturday before reaching 13.

Only five players in history have won the career grand slam - Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Mickelson said he did not mean to be disrespectful and Johnston had no issue with the birthday boy.

Mickelson caused significant controversy at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles when he criticized the captaincy of Tom Watson in the USA team's losing press conference.
