Compulsive video-game playing now new mental health problem, says WHO

Video gaming can be addictive in the same way as cocaine or gambling, the World Health Organization said Monday in a much anticipated update of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).

The classification is aimed at alerting health professionals and systems to the existence of this condition and ensuring that people suffering from these conditions can get appropriate help. One, that the gaming behaviour takes precedence over other activities to the extent that other activities are pushed to the periphery.

Griffiths said playing video games, for the vast majority of people, is more about entertainment and novelty, citing the overwhelming popularity of games like "Pokemon Go".

"People need to understand this doesn't mean every child who spends hours in their room playing games is an addict, otherwise medics are going to be flooded with requests for help", she said.

"We are not saying that all gaming is pathological".

Last week, the Mirror UK reported that a 9-year old girl was sent to rehab for video game addiction.

He even turned down invitations from England's manager Gareth Southgate to play in qualifying matches against Malta and Slovakia. That was until Tunisia seemed to replicate exactly what Walker did to concede a penalty.

Visitors play video games on June 12, 2018, at a Nintendo of America Inc. booth at E3, a large-scale computer and video game event held in Los Angeles. In fact, she urinated on herself while sitting down playing the game.

He guessed that the percentage of video game players with a compulsive problem was likely to be extremely small - much less than 1 percent - and that many such people would likely have other underlying problems, like depression, bipolar disorder or autism.

A 2013 statement from the group said it's "a condition warranting more clinical research and experience before it might be considered for inclusion" in its manual.

"Given the gravity of diagnostic classification and its wider social impact, we urge our colleagues at the World Health Organization to err on the side of caution for now and postpone the formalisation", they wrote in a study reviewing academic literature.

Gaming disorders are now being listed as a mental health condition, meaning that it can be diagnosed by doctors.

The ICD forms a basis for the WHO and other experts to see and respond to trends in health, and is also used by health insurers whose reimbursements depend on the classifications.
