Alonso has big decision to make after Le Mans win

The Toyotas controlled the race nearly from the very off, with the Number Eight vehicle - driven by Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso - looking the likely winners from the moment they overtook their Toyota team-mates just after 6am on Sunday morning.

The sister TS050 finished second - in formation as they crossed the line - driven by Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Jose Maria Lopez.

The triumph, expected after champions Porsche withdrew a year ago, came at the 20th attempt for Toyota who became only the second Japanese manufacturer to win the world's greatest endurance race after Mazda in 1991.

The two machines were in a class of their own, trading places for much of the event due to pit stops.

Alonso has had a challenging time in F1 of late, with his McLaren not yet capable of securing podiums or victories. "I've got into the rhythm of the night", Alonso had said over the team radio as he closed the gap.

Having dominated qualifying earlier in the weekend, Porsche emerged victorious with its #92 GT Team entry in GTE Pro, with the "Pink Pig" 911 RSR of Michael Christensen, Kevin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor beating its fellow #91 auto which finished in second place in the premier GT category. In 2016, Toyota's leading LMP1 TS050 Hybrid ground to a halt on the final lap to hand victory to Porsche.

In his pursuit of motor racing's Triple Crown - the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans - the two-time Formula One world champion ticked off the second of the three prizes in France.

"I attempted [Indy] past year with that intention". I can't thank them enough for the opportunity.

Sebastien Buemi set the quickest race lap during the opening stint with a 3:17.658, while the best single-lap pace from a non-hybrid vehicle was a 3:20.046, recorded by Neel Jani in the No. 1 Rebellion.

Queenslander Campbell, in just his second year of worldwide competition with Porsche, was handed his Le Mans debut over the weekend with a seat in the Dempsey-Proton 911 RSR alongside Christian Ried and Julien Andlauer. Will he stop F1 at the end of this year to focus on Indycar totally, or stay in F1 and just do the Indy 500 again next year, as he did in 2017?

The Manor-run TRSM team, running the new Ginetta chassis, also had a hard race.

But in the end, both cars made it to the finish, to complete the company's dream result - a one-two, with Alonso's auto the victor.
