Addicted To Gaming? You Are Suffering From Mental Disorder, As Per WHO!

The World Health Organization (WHO) just announced Monday that it will no longer be classifying gender incongruence as a mental disorder.

The United Nations" health agency on Tuesday released its latest global classification of diseases, known as the ICD-11, which categorises "gender incongruence' under a newly created chapter on sexual health. Because the United Kingdom has a public health system that follows these guidelines, the National Health Service in Britain might now treat gaming disorder.

There have been a number of recent high-profile stories about video game addiction, including reports of a nine-year-old who was found sitting on a urine-soaked cushion because she couldn't tear herself away from the screen.

The newly recognized disorder can be recognized with three signs, according to Tech Crunch: impaired control over gaming, increasing priority for gaming over other activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite negative consequences.

The ICD-11 defines gaming disorder as a pattern of gaming behaviour - "digital-gaming" or "video-gaming".

It added that such behavioural pattern would normally have been evident for at least 12 months.

The concept of video game addiction is nearly as old as gaming itself, but it's only this month that there's been any attempt to formally acknowledge it as a specific mental health problem.

It's not uncommon for people to get addicted to games.

This week, the group classified Gaming Disorder as a mental health illness.

Member states are expected to vote on the document at the World Health Assembly in Geneva in May 2019.

However, the DSM falls short of declaring gaming addiction a legitimate disorder.

The American Psychiatric Association held to its earlier position that there was not "sufficient evidence" to consider gaming addiction as a "unique mental disorder".

Saxena said parents and friends of video game enthusiasts should still be mindful of a potentially harmful problem.

So the World Health Organization puts "gaming disorder" on a list.

The disagreement casts veil of confusion over how to approach a behavior associated with some deaths over the last two decades and as parents grapple with the increased popularity of online gaming. Working full-time, he keeps active by playing sport, but he said it was "totally understandable" that gaming can become addictive.
