Six Senate Democrats Helped Republicans Confirm Torturer Gina Haspel

The Senate confirmed Gina Haspel on Thursday as the first female director of the CIA following a hard nomination process that reopened an emotional debate about brutal interrogation techniques in one of the darkest chapters in the spy agency's history.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, a top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, echoed the sentiment of Haspel's opponents in the Senate.

The 61-year-old Haspel, a Russian Federation specialist who spent her career in the clandestine service, takes over from Mike Pompeo, whom Trump recently made his secretary of state.

Haspel, who will be the first woman to lead the CIA, is a 33-year veteran at the agency and now serving as its acting director.

Six Democrats joined President Donald Trump's fellow Republicans in voting for Haspel, and two Republicans voted no.

Haspel's nomination was contentious because of her role in a former Central Intelligence Agency program to brutally detain and interrogate terror suspects at covert sites overseas following September 11.

John Brennan, CIA director during Obama's tenure, said, "Haspel has the experience, the breadth and depth, on intelligence issues".

Democratic Senators that followed Warner's vote of Yea were, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Bill Nelson of Florida and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire.

"I think she's a particularly disastrous choice, being one of the principal actors" in the torture program of the Bush administration, Alberto Mora, the former general counsel for the US Navy and a senior fellow at the Harvard's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, told Al Jazeera.

The American Civil Liberties Union also attacked Haspel's confirmation, calling it "a complete disgrace to our democracy".

"I am grateful to President Trump for the opportunity, and humbled by his confidence in me", Haspel said in a statement.

Ahead of the vote, McConnell said Haspel "demonstrated candor, integrity, and a forthright approach" during the confirmation process and that she "has quietly earned the respect and admiration" the intelligence community at home and overseas. John McCain of Arizona, who is battling cancer and did not vote; Sen.

As a clandestine officer at the CIA, Haspel was in charge of a secret operation labelled "Cat's eye", involving torture of two suspected terrorists, in what is called a "black site" in Thailand.

Haspel may have possibly done her self some good when trying to get Senator Warner's vote as well.

Haspel, who later helped in the destruction of tapes of waterboarding, proudly defended her role in the program - even if she says she would not allow it again. Then several members of the Senate intelligence asked to reconsider this appointment, pointing out that the Genie Haspel was personally involved in unacceptable methods of interrogation, and then contributed to the unauthorized destruction of evidence.
