Sensex falls over 230 points in closing, Nifty comes below 10700

Index-wise, the wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed at 10,741.10 points - down 60.75 points or 0.56 per cent from the previous close of 10,801.85 points.

The BSE Sensex fell 238.76 points to close at 35,149.12 while the NSE Nifty dropped 58.40 points to 10,682.70.

In a highly volatile trade witnessed during the day, the Sensex went down by 91 points to 35,452.35 in the morning session. Ironically, the advance decline ratio was positive after a gap of seven sessions as the weakness was limited to the large cap stocks.

Brokers said apart from political uncertainty in Karnataka, a weak trend at other Asian bourses following overnight losses at the Wall Street dampened sentiments.

At 1:31 PM, the BSE Sensex was trading at 35,282, down 105 points, while the Nifty50 index was trading at 10,716, down 25 points. The Mid-cap index gained 0.37%.

The equity market was ended on a weaker note as United States and Asian shares declined amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Korean peninsula.

On the currency front, the Indian rupee strengthened by 72 paise against the USA dollar to 67.80, from its previous close at 68.08 per greenback.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 531.33 crore while Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) sold shares to the tune of Rs 518.47 crore on Tuesday, provisional data showed.

In the euro zone, stock markets in Germany and France were up in early trade and rose up to 0.47 percent.

Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.49 per cent while Japan's Nikkei was down by 0.38 per cent in early trade today.

The major gainers on the BSE were Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Wipro, Yes Bank, Tata Motors (DVR), while ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, State Bank of India, Hero MotoCorp, and Adani Ports were the major losers.
