Ramadan 2018: Sultan urges Muslims to look out for new moon tomorrow

Though in some countries a lack of moon-sighting has bumped the start of Ramadan to Thursday, the US and Europe begin observing the month at sundown tonight.

"The resolution stipulates that all Shariah courts in the state shall investigate the vision and provide the committee with evidence", according to a statement.

The moon-sighting tradition follows the words of the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), who said: "Do not fast until you see it [the crescent] and do not break the fast until you see it, and if it is covered then complete the month".

"On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish all those observing this holy month a blessed and peaceful Ramadan".

The announcement was made after the Saudi moon-sighting committee met on Tuesday evening and were not able to sight the Ramadan crescent, Al Arabiya reported.

Islamic months can be 29 or 30 days based on the appearance of the moon crescent at night.

Astronomers in Kuwait and Sharjah have also indicated May 17 will be the likely start date for the month of Ramadan.

Oman was the first country in the Gulf to announce when it will mark the beginning of Ramadan.

Announcing the timings of various services during the holy month, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said from Saturday to Wednesday, the Metro service will be operational on both the lines from 5am to 12am.

For the world's 1.8 billion Muslims, including Britain's 3.1 million-strong Muslim community, the annual event represents a time to fast and devote a particular focus to prayer, purification and charitable acts.
