Pilot gets 'sucked halfway out' of cockpit when windshield shatters

The plane reached its cruising altitude of 32,000 feet some 30 minutes into the flight, and then the trouble began, says the captain of a Sichuan Airlines flight en route from China to Tibet on Monday morning.

The Sichuan Airlines plane was flying from Chongqing to the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, on Monday when the incident occurred. When he looked up, he saw his co-pilots windshield was shattered and that the co-pilot himself was on the verge of being blasted out of the aircraft, only able to pull himself back in because he was wearing a seatbelt. "The next thing I knew, my co-pilot had been sucked halfway out". He suffered scratches and a sprained wrist, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said, adding that one other cabin crew member was also injured in the descent. "The plane was shaking so hard I could not read the gauges", Liu said.

The next day, a window panel "fell off" an Air India flight, injuring three passengers after the plane hit severe turbulence.

Liu was hailed as a hero on social media after being forced to land the Airbus A319 manually following the decompression, The Independent reports.

The harrowing incident comes almost a month after a woman on a Southwest Airlines flight from NY died after shrapnel from a blown engine smashed her window, forcing out part of her body. "The noise was so loud that we could barely hear the radio".

He did not provide details. "Our situation is likely to get tougher", said the group's co-chair Marta Pardavi. Warsaw faces possible moves to suspend its membership rights.

"It is a huge challenge facing decompression and low temperatures", said the Air China pilot. The cabin crew calmed the passengers and helped them put on oxygen masks. The flight attendants were in the process of serving dinner at the time the window smashed and the jarring of the airplane caused food to go everywhere. Another flight attendant grabbed the first flight attendant's belt to ensure that he and the pilot didn't disappear into the sky, while the co-pilot struggled to take the plane out of a nose dive that was triggered when the captain's feet latched onto the controls.

CAAC also said that the windshield was part of the original aircraft and had no previously recorded faults.

The CAA said the windshield showed no signs of malfunction that required any maintenance prior to the incident.

"The windshield just cracked and made a loud bang".

Airbus and France's BEA accident investigation agency are sending teams to China to investigate the incident.
