Facebook says posts with graphic violence rose in early 2018

It took down 21 million pieces of adult nudity and sexual activity in Q1 2018 - the company's systems had already flagged 96% before being reported. For every 10,000 views of content on Facebook, the company said, roughly 8 of them were removed for featuring sex or nudity in the first quarter, up from 7 views at the end of previous year.

However, it declined to say how many minors - legal users who are between the ages of 13 and 17 - saw the offending content. This entire effort comes in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, which breached user data of over 87 million people.

During the press call, Schultz noted it will be a mix of full-timers and contractors spread across 16 locations around the world. During Q1, Facebook found and flagged 85.6% of such content it took action on before users reported it, up from 71.6% in Q4.

Nevertheless, the company took down nearly twice as much content in both segments during this year's first quarter, compared with Q4. A Bloomberg report last week showed that while Facebook says it's become effective at taking down terrorist content from al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, recruitment posts for other US -designated terrorist groups are found easily on the site.

Utilizing new artificial-intelligence-based technology, Facebook can find and moderate content more rapidly and effectively than the traditional, human counterpart-that is, in terms of detecting fake accounts or spam, at least.

The response to extreme content on Facebook is particularly important given that it has come under intense scrutiny amid reports of governments and private organizations using the platform for disinformation campaigns and propaganda. Which is to say, this doesn't mean that 0.22% of the content posted on Facebook contained graphic violence; just that the graphic content posted accounted for 0.22% of total views.

Soros goes from Hungary
He did not provide details. "Our situation is likely to get tougher", said the group's co-chair Marta Pardavi. Warsaw faces possible moves to suspend its membership rights.

It disabled 583 million fake accounts.

Facebook's vice president of product management, Guy Rosen, said that the company's systems are still in development for some of the content checks. "We removed 2.5 million pieces of hate speech in Q1 2018 - 38% of which was flagged by our technology". Facebook still estimates that fake profiles represent 3 per cent to 4 per cent of monthly active users.

"These kinds of metrics can help our teams understand what's actually happening to 2-plus billion people", he said.

Spam continues to be a problem at Facebook and a whopping 837 million pieces were removed from its service during the first quarter.

While AI is getting more effective at flagging content, Facebook's human reviewers still have to finish the job.

Absent from the report is a precise number of how many accounts and pages have been banned or suspended from the platform over "hate speech", and how many have been mistakenly suspended and then restored. And more generally, as I explained last week, technology needs large amounts of training data to recognise meaningful patterns of behavior, which we often lack in less widely used languages or for cases that are not often reported.
