The widely followed analyst slashed his price target for shares of the electric automaker to $291 from $376 on Tuesday, bringing his target below Tesla's trading price for the first time in months.

Tesla said its autopilot system is unlikely to have been a factor in the crash, but it marks the agency's fourth active investigation into crashes of the company's electric vehicles.

Cantonal police in Ticino are not commenting on the fatal accident which is one of three incidents involving Tesla cars in recent days.

"As part of the reorg, we are flattening the management structure to improve communication, combining functions where sensible and trimming activities that are not vital to the success of our mission", Musk said in the memo, which was obtained by Jalopnik and confirmed by Tesla to Business Insider.

Musk said in the memo that Tesla still plans to hire more people to help it ramp up its Model 3 production.

Tesla said it will pause production at its Fremont, California factory at the end of the May to work on fixes to its assembly line for its new Model 3 sedan, sources inside the company told Reuters.

On 2 May Musk said Tesla would conduct "a reorganisation restructuring" during May, without providing more details.

Autopilot, a form of advanced cruise control, handles some driving tasks and warns those behind the wheel they are always responsible for the vehicle's safe operation, Tesla has said.

On 2 May a U.S. traffic safety regulator contradicted Tesla's claim that the agency had found that its Autopilot technology significantly reduced crashes.

Musk tweeted that while the eye tracking had been on the table, it was rejected for its ineffectiveness rather than cost.

In a March 30 company blog post, Tesla claimed its autopilot-enabled vehicles are involved in 1 automobile fatality every 320 million miles driven, versus 1 fatality for every 86 million miles driven in vehicles by all other manufacturers.

In another Twitter message on Monday, Musk said the "probability of fatality is much lower in a Tesla", saying Tesla would begin reporting safety numbers beginning in the second quarter.

News of the crash came as a top Tesla official who had been the main technical contact with USA safety investigators left the company to join rival Waymo.

A Tesla Inc Model S crashed at speed into a truck from the city's Unified Fire Authority in South Jordan, Utah, late on Friday after failing to slow for a red light, South Jordan police said on Monday. The 28-year-old driver of the auto told police in suburban Salt Lake City that the system was switched on and that she had been looking at her phone before the Friday evening crash.
