Woolworths is turning customers away from its stores, following reports the Australian supermarket chain is suffering a nationwide IT outage.

Woolworths confirmed the outage in a social media post, saying that "an IT issue impacted registers in our supermarkets for a short period of time this afternoon". "We were all offered a box of chocolates". I just spent 45 minutes shopping with 3 kids and your registers go down and you tell me (quite rudely) that I need to leave the store without my groceries. But no.you throw everyone out on school holidays with nothing for dinner. Customers of the supermarket giant were left frustrated when about 500 of its stores struggled to reboot their systems after an IT glitch, leaving them unable to check out their groceries.

The ABC reached out to Woolworths for comment.

A technical issue has forced Woolworths shops across Australia to close.
