Weekend Box Office: Between The Rock And 'A Quiet Place'

The action hero's new disaster movie Rampage will debut with an estimated $34.5 million from 4,101 theaters in the US and Canada through Sunday, edging out last week's No. 1 title, A Quiet Place, while the horror flick Truth or Dare opens in third.

Rampage had a big first weekend domestically, but as EW notes, it's first-weekend haul is on the low side of industry projections, which had it making in the $35 million-$40 million.

The worldwide figures will certainly bring some relief to studio execs sweating at the USA disappointment, although with a total opening weekend haul that looks set to be less than $70M, the movie still has some way to go to make back its $120M production budget.

Based on the classic arcade game about giant monsters laying waste to cities, Rampage stars Johnson as a primatologist and former soldier who gets caught up in a rogue experiment that mutates an albino gorilla he saved from poachers - as well as a wolf and a crocodile.

Allardyce hails 'battling' Everton draw at Swansea
Over four months into Sam Allardyce's reign at Everton , we're no closer to knowing what sort of team he's trying to build here. The swans will be without Fer and Wilfried Bony , who are ruled out to the end of the season with injuries.

Dwayne Johnson and Naomie Harris in "Rampage". In China alone the movie took in $55 million. This weekend's almost $33 million gorss pushes its 10-day total of $100 million against a $17 million budget.

"A Quiet Place" should earn a slightly bigger weekend total.

In third is Universal/Blumhouse's "Truth Or Dare", which made $19 million in its opening weekend from 3,029 locations.

But with a $120 million budget, the profitability of "Rampage" is still up in the air, as box office analysts who spoke with TheWrap agree that the film likely has just two weekends to make its money before Marvel's "Avengers: Infinity War" gobbles up screens and consumers. The film has been received poorly with a B- CinemaScore grade and a 15 percent RT score. They may flip positions on the weekend chart, with "Ready Player One" earning $10-12 million and "Blockers" earning $9-11 million.
