Unnao rape: CBI makes second arrest; Sengar sent to seven-day custody

A row has surfaced over the actual age of the Unnao gang-rape victim and slapping of provisions of the POCSO Act on the accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar who has been arrested by the CBI.

The CBI team is likely to take the MLA and his alleged woman accomplice Shashi Singh to Unnao for spot identification and then conduct a face-off with the survivor. The girl had alleged that Senger had also raped her at his residence on June 4, 2017.

The CBI on Saturday had the victim undergo a medical examination at Lucknow's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, reportedly to determine her age.

The CBI has arrested Swetabh Suman, Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit), Guwahati, Assam from Delhi in connection with a case of tax evasion and criminal conspiracy. Initially, police didn't take action on the victim's complaint.

Earlier on Tuesday, the brother of Sengar was arrested by the police.

Earlier in July, the Himachal Pradesh High Court transferred the two cases to the CBI after the custodial death of Suraj Singh came to light.

However, in a new set of developments in the Unnao gangrape case, the medical certificate of the girl dating back to June 22, 2017, claims she was 19 years old when the alleged crime took place, hence challenging a key aspect of the case - that she was a minor. The third case pertains to the allegations against the victim's father, who was arrested under the Arms Act and put in jail by the police, where he died. According to the post-mortem examination report, he had suffered serious injuries.

After the special investigation team headed by additional DG (Lucknow zone) Rajeev Krishna submitted its interim report late on Wednesday evening, an FIR in the rape case was lodged on Thursday on the basis of a written complaint filed by the mother of the rape survivor.

Almost a year ago, on June 4, 2017, the victim - a minor at the time - visited the MLA's residence with a relative seeking a job, where she was allegedly raped by Sengar and others.
