U.S. mulls fresh sanctions on Russian Federation over Putin's support for Syrian ally

Russian Federation has said worldwide inspectors will be allowed to visit the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria tomorrow - 11 days after the incident. Syria and its ally Russian Federation deny that any chemical attack took place.

Yet a report on SANA that Syrian air defences had shot down missiles over Homs province overnight raised fears that further action had indeed been taken.

The OPCW, an independent global body, is now in Damascus on a mission to establish what happened in Douma after reports emerged from the area on April 7 of people killed and injured by toxic chemicals during shelling by the Assad regime's forces. Russian military police were ready to help protect the OPCW experts on their visit to Douma, said Maj.

The suspected attack in Douma, outside Damascus, in which the World Health Organization has said 43 people who died suffered "symptoms consistent with exposure to highly toxic chemicals", occurred on April 7.

Focus was however shifting to renewed diplomatic action, with a new resolution to be debated at the UN Security Council on Monday.

The U.S., United Kingdom and France accuse President Bashar Al-Assad of carrying out the April 7 attack, which killed dozens of people.

The inspectors arrived in Damascus on the day of the Western strikes but had not been allowed to enter Douma.

Those attacks were retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack that they blamed on the Syrian government. The government later said a United Nations advance team had reached the city.

As CBS News correspondent Seth Doane reports, rebel forces had held Douma nearly since the start of the war in Syria, now more than seven years old, and the government's fight to take it back was fierce.

He and Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, were said to have been pushing for a more robust strike.

Assad has benefited from Russian air power since 2015 to regain large swathes of Syria.

The European Union hinted on Monday that the bloc would take more measures against Syria in regard to a suspected chemical attack by the Syrian regime. Hours after the alleged chemical attack, the rebel faction that controlled the town, the Army of Islam, relented and was evacuated along with thousands of residents.

In an interview with French television, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that the weekend air strikes against Syrian government targets had succeeded in engineering a split in the Russia-Turkey alliance. It also blamed Islamic State for mustard gas use.

Around 75 people are reported to have died in the alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, which is now under government control after rebels withdrew.

British Prime Minister Theresa May says Syria and Russian Federation - whose forces now control the town east of Damascus - are trying to cover up evidence. Turkey has so far established nine observation posts in Idlib and is due to set up three more to monitor the ceasefire between the Syrian regime and opposition groups.

The meeting came a day after USA -led strikes, launched together with Britain and France, hit three Syrian chemical weapons facilities.
