Trump may allow states to drug test food stamp recipients

The Trump administration is considering letting states require some food stamp recipients be drug tested in order to receive their benefits, The Associated Press reported.

The Trump administration is weighing a proposal that would apply mostly to people who are able-bodied, without dependents and applying for some specialized jobs.

It would apply to about 5 percent of people in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), according to the source. Only 23 people actually wound up taking the test, and only six failed and were removed from the program.

"I'm sure there are cases where it's an unreasonable thing, but I do think it's a just cause", another said. Viral petition asks for food stamps to pay for pet food Back in 2015, a lawsuit filed by Wisconsin's governor against the USDA for blocking drug tests was eventually thrown out. "It's costly and cumbersome". Rather, in general terms, it requires federal agencies to enforce current work requirements, to propose newer and stronger requirements, to find savings (or as Vox writer Tara Golshan puts it, "make cuts"), and to give states more flexibility to run their own welfare programs. At least 15 states passed laws allowing drug testing for recipients of temporary assistance.

Others disagreed. Some argued that there should be some type of reason behind the testing.

The Trump administration is now considering a plan that includes drug testing. States would also be required to provide training slots for every SNAP participant who needs one.

Some 669,355 requests for links to be removed from the search engine results have been made to Google since the ruling. In those circumstances, "the public interest in having information with his name about this case doesn't prevail".

If enacted, the House Agriculture Committee estimates that roughly 1 million people would leave the program over the next decade either because they would earn too much to qualify or because they would not meet the revised work requirement. Emails obtained by the AP, however, "suggest that a plan could be forthcoming", the news outlet noted.

That's because the court said no, you couldn't do blanket testing of everyone getting food stamps.

He says the benefits should be used to help people who are hooked on drugs get the treatment they need.

The discussion of the future of SNAP and potential changes to the program are set against the backdrop of the 2018 farm bill, slated for release as soon as this week.

Mahoning County Jobs and Family Services Director Robert Bush said over 44,000 people received food stamps last month in the county. "This is kind of a different bucket". The Department of Agriculture, which administers the program, blocked the move. The food box plan was tucked into the Trump administration's proposed 2019 budget, which included cutting the SNAP program by $213 billion over the next 10 years.
