That Extra Glass of Wine Might Take 30 Minutes Off Your Life

Researchers looked at 83 studies involving 600,000 people from 19 high-income countries, with nearly half of data coming from the UK.

The new study showed that the top of the safe limit for weekly drinking was about five drinks a week, which translates to just over five United Kingdom pints (or 95 ounces in the U.S.) of beer with a 4% alcohol by volume or five 175ml (or 29.5 ounces in the U.S.) of wine with a 13% alcohol by volume.

The UK reduced its guideline limit to a "low risk" 14 units for both sexes in 2016, equivalent to six 175ml glasses of wine, six pints of beer or cider, or 14 single gin and tonics. Once you start consuming more than the recommended amount on a regular basis, you could get into trouble.

The study of almost 600,000 drinkers found that the risk of death from all causes increased as alcohol consumption climbed. More than that raises the risk of stroke, fatal aneurysm, heart failure and death, the study found, according to The Guardian.

Those drinking more than 350g of alcohol per week - equivalent to almost 44 units or 19 pints of beer - had an estimated lower life expectancy at age 40 of four to five years compared to a drinker consuming less than 100g per week. The study is big news for drinkers across the world since countries have different recommendations for alcohol consumption. At 40 years of age, those who had an intake of between seven and 14 drinks per week had a six-month-lower estimated life expectancy than those who drank fewer than seven.

Buckel added that he hoped his death would lead to greater activism: "Honorable goal in life invites honorable objective in death".

"This is a serious wake-up call for many countries", said Jeremy Pearson, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation charity, which helped fund the study, in a statement. It does reduce the chance of a non-fatal heart attack.

But they said "on balance" there are no health benefits from drinking and further research was needed to explore the link.

Victoria Taylor, senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, said the study seemed to "broadly reinforce" Government guidelines. More than 18 drinks a week could shorten someone's lifespan by four to five years, the BBC said. Consuming two bacon sandwiches a week or sitting watching a hour of television per day is statistically more unsafe for long-term health.

"Above two units a day, the death rates steadily climb", said David Spiegelhalter, Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at the University of Cambridge. It relied on self-reported drinking habits and didn't take into account the effect of alcohol over the course of a person's life, for example.
