Gianluigi Buffon 'stands by' Michael Oliver comments

Her husband refereed the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final between Real Madrid and Juventus.

In a dramatic end to the match at the Bernabeu in Madrid, Juventus captain and Italy worldwide Buffon was sent off for confronting Oliver over the 93rd-minute penalty decision.

At 40 years old, Buffon may never play in the Champions League again and, when Oliver gave the penalty, Buffon received a red card shortly after for the nature of his protest against the decision.

In a heated post-match interview, Buffon said the English official has "a rubbish bin for a heart" after dismissing him in his final European appearance.

Juve legend Alessandro del Piero felt that the experienced keeper would regret the remarks, but Buffon is refusing to backtrack. But the content remains and I stand by all of it. He would have left it running, turned around and let the two teams fight it out in extra time.

Buffon said Oliver should not have given the penalty so late in the game if it wasn't absolutely clear, and according to the legendary goalkeeper, "it was a tenth of a penalty". I had to let that out, even if it damaged my reputation'. It was an astonishing comeback and Buffon's hopes of a first Champions League title were still alive.

Cristiano Ronaldo had another opinion about the penalty; he said that there was no doubt that Oliver took the right decision.

"We could've written a memorable page in the history books of football for Juve, for Italy".

'Before being a Juventino, I am an Italian, and I really cared about Italian football doing well.

Juventus had come back from losing 3-0 at home to lead 3-0 at the Bernabeu in the second leg of the last-eight tie on Wednesday. I got emotional. It was just priceless.

It's not just the Premier League referee who has had to deal with a barrage of negative comments.

Lineker called Buffon's behaviour "out of order" in a tweet directed at the Italian.

It's saddeningly and maddeningly arrogant from Buffon to question Oliver's experience and his guts as in the end he made the correct decision and considering the situation a lot of refs wouldn't have had the testicular fortitude to point to the spot.

Gianluigi Buffon was knocked out of the Champions League, perhaps for the final time, in the cruelest of ways on Wednesday night.
