Georgia gets upgrade in index of Reporters Without Borders media rating

The annual report, published on Wednesday by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), reflects the state of journalism around the globe.

"After stifling independent voices at home, Vladimir Putin's Russian Federation (148th) is extending its propaganda network by means of media outlets such as RT and Sputnik, while Xi Jinping's China (176th) is exporting its tightly controlled news and information model in Asia", the report said.

The Guardian editor, Katharine Viner, launched the report at the Guardian's office in central London, warning the worldwide "situation in terms of press freedom is getting worse".

It said the media has suffered in the form of killings, direct attacks, intimidation, threats, and pressures from various quarters.

Among the concerns about the UK, Reporters Without Borders cited the implementation of the Investigatory Powers Act, which it said gives insufficient protection to whistleblowers, journalists and their sources, threats to encryption tools and plans to criminalise repeated viewing of extremist content. The index's release comes amid mounting warnings about the dangers of Trump's attacks on the news media, which he has called "the enemy of the American people".

In Saturday's operation, the workers were taken to shelter houses ran by the embassy and would soon be repatriated, diplomats in Manila said.

While an overall decline in press freedom preceded Trump's presidency, "the Trump effect has only served to amplify the disappointing press freedom climate", the group wrote in this year's report. "It's phony stuff. It didn't happen".

Taiwan, the democratic island nation that Beijing claims as part of its territory, is ranked 42 in the latest World Press Freedom Index, an improvement of 3 places over 2017, the highest score for press freedom in Asia. In the Czech Republic, which dropped 11 places on the index to be ranked 34, "President Milos Zeman turned up at a press conference with a fake Kalashnikov inscribed with the words 'for journalists'".

Vietnam and China stand at the 175th and 176th positions respectively, followed by Syria, Turkmenistan, Eritrea, and North Korea retaining the last place in the rating. The United States is an example in hand as its rank fell from 43 to 45.

Historically, Europe has had the freest press in the world. The treatment of the press by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama led many journalists to question how dedicated to the ideals of the First Amendment either political party really was.

In Poland, officials fined a television station for supporting "illegal activities" by reporting on anti-government protests, Freedom House said. The report concludes that hatred of journalism is threatening democracies across the world.
