Ford Focus gets rebuilt from ground up

Today, Ford revealed the bigger picture, unveiling redesigned versions of the global Focus in hatchback and wagon form (with a four-door sedan also slated to be part of the lineup), though it's unclear which ones will be coming stateside when they go on sale in late 2019.

This is it. The all-new 2018-2019 Ford Focus, ready to set the world on fire... or, at least, scare the hell out of the popular small vehicle rivals.

Expect roomier and more comfortable interiors, the automaker says, while adding that the next-gen Focus will feature new gas and diesel engines, as well as a new suspension. Globally, the Focus will be offered in ascending trim levels that include a new luxury-first Focus Vignale available in Europe, a newly minted ST-Line with sporty looks sans hardware, and an Active trim level for completely sedentary on-the-go lifestyles.

We'll have to wait to learn what will power the USA version of the Focus, but in Europe, Ford is adding two new options: a 1.5-liter EcoBoost gas engine and a 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel.

Both are paired to an eight-speed automatic, which is now controlled by a rotary dial ala Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, rather than the traditional gear lever. Currently, the company says, there are around 360 different ways the existing vehicle can be specified.

"Innovation in every area has helped us create an all-new Focus with unprecedented craftsmanship and delivering an unparalleled driving and occupant experience", commented Ford of Europe vice president, Joe Bakaj.

To put its success into perspective, Ford has sold 1.95 million in the United Kingdom, almost 7m in Europe and over 16m worldwide, in 20 years.
