CWG 2018 Day 10: Neeraj Chopra wins javelin gold

India's medal tally in CWG 2018 now moves to 49 out of which 22 are gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze.

Overall, Neeraj's medal is only the fifth track and field gold for India in the quadrennial event - the other four being sprinter Milkha Singh (1958), discus thrower Krishna Poonia (2010), the women's 4x400m relay quartet of Manjeet Kaur, Sini Jose, Ashwini Akkunji and Mandeep Kaur (2010) and shot-putter Vikas Gowda (2014).

Chopra, who held the best throw among javelin throwers from the Commonwealth participants this year, was seen as India's best bet in the field events.

What makes his feat more commendable is that the farmer's son from Khandra village near Panipat never had a formal coach while growing up. He missed recording a personal best by just one centimetre and that kept cropping up in his mind. Chopra continued with an enthusiastic performance, throwing a season-best of 86.47, previously best was 85.94m. His victory was a forgone conclusion after Olympics and world silver medallist Julius Yego of Kenya failed to qualify for the final round on Friday.

The player gave a flawless shot in the very first throw achieving the qualifying mark. After a strong start to the event, which saw Chopra rise to a Gold medal spot after a throw of 85.50 m, he faltered in his second attempt before he could hit a mark of 84.78 in his third attempt. With his fourth throw, he reached 86.47. The 20-year-old Haryana boy set a seasonal best score of 86.47 to push Hamish Peacock of Australia and Anderson Peters of Grenada to second and third place respectively.

"It is a very important medal for me and I am happy to win it". In my desperation for that, I tried so hard that I tumbled over in my last two attempts. "You definitely get distracted by that", added Chopra.

For celebration, Neeraj had his friend Vinesh Phogat at the stands before the wrestler went to the adjacent Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre to win a gold medal. It builds pressure on others.
