50-Year-old Tammy Duckworth becomes first sitting Senator to give birth

Her daughter, Maile Pearl Bowlsbey, was born Monday. Duckworth had her daughter at 47 while she was serving in the House, and her second child will be born shortly after she turns 50.

Duckworth and her husband, Bryan Bowlsbey, named their second daughter Maile Pearl Bowlsbey.

Last month senators from both parties, as well as their staff, hosted a baby shower for Mrs Duckworth at the US Capitol, according to the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, which was first to report the birth. She had her first child in 2014 while serving in the House of Representatives - both children conceived through in vitro fertilization. Her office said she is "recovering well" from the birth.

When Tammy was deployed to Iraq in 2004, she was in the process of working towards a PhD at Northern Illinois University. She declared the happy news on micro blogging site Twitter.

Gov. Ducey proclaims April 9-13 as Work Zone Awareness Week
Ivey has issued a proclamation naming April 9-13, 2018 as National Work Zone Awareness Week in the state of Alabama. If you're speeding, you may encounter slowed or stopped traffic within seconds.

After losing her first Congressional campaign, Tammy was appointed as Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and held that position in 2009.

In a series of tweets, she also thanked her family and medical team. Daniel K. Akaka, a Democrat from Hawaii, was "able to bless her name for us" before his death Friday.

"Parenthood isn't simply a women's issue, it's an economic issue and also the one that affects most parents - men and women alike", Ms. Duckworth explained in her statement declaring Maile's birth. "I don't consider myself unique, because there are billions of working parents, and my children will only motivate me to do my job", she said.

"She's going to be taking much of the next 12 weeks to spend time bonding with her new daughter and spending time with her family", said Sean Savett, a spokesman. She's become known for her support of affordable child care, paid parental leave, and other family health issues.
