To be precise, one hour 8 minutes and 16 seconds, beyond which, the user can not erase messages.

Now, for reasons unknown, the time is one hour, eight minutes, and 16 seconds.

WhatsApp only few months ago launched the Delete for everyone feature that allows users to delete any sent message on the app.

Nevertheless, having a grace period of one hour can prove beneficial especially to those who want to erase past messages that may be misconstrued or incriminating. Meanwhile, rival messaging app Telegram gives users 48 hours to unsend messages. "Similarly, if you see 'This message was deleted' in a chat, it means that the sender deleted their message for everyone".

Now, the company is testing a new feature, which would allow users to customize the shape and size of the WhatsApp icon on the home screen.

The algorithm has been improved to perform the delete operation only if the current date is less than 24 hours of the date of the saved message. There's no explanation for why the time limit has expanded so dramatically, so it looks like WhatsApp doesn't think this is a big enough feature to get singled out.

WhatsApp has quietly updated this time window of which you may delete a message after it is sent.
