Taliban seize district headquarters in Afghanistan's Farah province

Afghan forces backed by air strikes battled on Monday to recapture a district centre in the western province of Farah, after Taliban fighters seized the town in an overnight attack in which several policeman were killed, regional officials said.

Local television station 1TV reported that at least 10 police officers, including the chief of police, were killed in the Taliban attack.

The motive behind the attack remained unknown and the Taliban has yet to make comments on the report.

The fall of the district, Anardarah, came days after Afghan security forces suffered heavy casualties in another district of Farah, which borders Iran and is situated on one of the country's most lucrative drug routes.

This comes after a major air and ground operation was launched by reinforcements. The provincial government said 13 militants were also killed in the fighting.

Over the weekend, a Taliban attack killed seven army commandos and eight policemen in Bala Buluk district.

Nasrat Rahimi, a deputy spokesman of the interior ministry, said reinforcements had arrived in Anar Dara town and surrounded a group of Taliban fighters.

In February, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, said the Pentagon had restricted the release of information on the areas that are under the Taliban and the Afghan government.

Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor, said two other people in the vehicle were wounded in the attack, which was in the Bati Kot district.

The exact number of killed or wounded is still not clear as the fighting is still under way, officials said. The victims are all members of a single family, he added.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but both the Taliban and Daesh are active in eastern Afghanistan, particularly in Nangarhar province.

No comment was immediately available from USA military headquarters in Kabul.

In January, the governor of Farah resigned, blaming political interference and corruption.
