'Smash and grab' of land won't happen in South Africa, says Ramaphosa

Ramaphosa's acting spokesperson, Tyrone Seale, said the president had started the visit in Luanda, Angola, where he met with President João Lourenço, before travelling to Namibia to meet with President Hage Geingob.

Whites still own most of South Africa's land following centuries of brutal colonial dispossession.

The president has since travelled to travel to Gaborone, Botswana, on Saturday, to hold a consultative meeting with President Seretse Khama.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - South Africa's new president said Thursday that the transfer of some land from the country's white minority to the black majority will be handled without damaging the economy and that there will be "no smash and grab".

Although the move has been largely welcomed, pushback is being expressed from parties who view the process as political point-scoring by the ruling party ahead of next year's election.

On Feb. 27, lawmakers agreed to the principle of seizure without pay, and parliament's Constitutional Review Committee will report back to lawmakers on changes to section 25 of the Constitution by August 30.

"There is no doubt that dealing with sustainable land reform is fundamental to our country".

A group that primarily represents South Africa's white Afrikaner minority said this week that it plans to launch an worldwide campaign to warn governments and foreign investors that property rights would be vulnerable and investments would not be safe if the government proceeds with land reform.

After his visits to Angola and Namibia on Friday, Ramaphosa thanked both presidents and said the visits would strengthen the relationships between the countries and South Africa.

Ramaphosa appealed for calm, saying some people are trying to stoke fear among South Africans and in the global community about the issue.

Tensions are brewing as the country reacts to the amendment to the constitution to deliver the ANC and EFF's policy of land expropriation without compensation, which was adopted by Parliament.

Two decades after the end of apartheid and celebrations marking Nelson Mandela's release from prison, white estate proprietors continue to occupy the overwhelming majority of South Africa's land.

The official opposition Democratic Alliance party (DA) opposed the motion, arguing that changes to Section 25 will undermine property rights and scare off potential investors.
