Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+: An insider's guide (free PDF)

It is Pi day (assuming you live in a country that insists on writing dates in the frankly barking mad MM/DD format) and after a quiet two years, the Raspberry Pi Foundation have pushed out a new version of the tiny computer. Not only is the 3B+ sporting Bluetooth 4.2, but it also has increased support for dual-band Wi-Fi connections.

The key improvements on the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ are its processor and networking capabilities.

The Model B+ features all of these improvements while retaining the size of its predecessor while will enable DIYers to use the new board in the cases that they already have. Now, the makers of Raspberry Pi have come up with an updated model addressing the limitations of the previous versions.

Finally, the Model B+ comes with Power over Ethernet (PoE), which hasn't received official support until now. The new processor is not only faster, but also comes with a heat spreader and power integrity optimizations to better manage the temperature.

Upgraded specs in the B+ also lead to more power consumption than the previous boards.

Selling for just $35, the UK-made machine has become something of a phenomenon, selling close to 18 million boards since the first Pi was released in 2012.

That said, the foundation says the Pi 3 Model B+ can sustain high performance for much longer periods than its predecessors.

Of the 19 million Raspberry Pis sold to date, more than 9 million have been Pi 3 Model B flavors.

In a nod to FCC compliance, the radio circuitry is now covered by a metal shield, which allows the Pi team to have the entire device classified as a radio module. The Raspberry Pi Foundation is planning to launch a PoE HAT soon that generates the necessary 5V power from the 48V PoE supply. However, it's pretty clear the Pi 3 Model B+ will become the most popular choice very quickly.

Raspberry Pi is a fantastic low-priced hardware platform that enables hackers and developers to create IoT solutions. He adds: "We want to make Raspberry Pi more open over time, not less".
